I aim for 90-100% French immersion in my classes (depending on your level), influenced by research on second language acquisition. You should expect a well-paced, structured plan. I also give classes on pronunciation and speech in French, and I strongly value transparency.

Luis and I were in a Master’s program together, and we also taught in the same French department. Luis was always able to be a substitute, and my students adored his lessons! They were engaging and gave my students great practice. Luis has a wealth of knowledge that he is always willing to discuss and share. I greatly enjoyed the conversations we had in and out of the classroom. Anyone who has had the opportunity to work with or learn from Luis is better for it.
Luis was my professor when I began learning French at university. He is an excellent teacher, dedicated to helping his students build a strong foundation. His teaching style is clear and engaging, with a focus on helping students gain confidence in writing, speaking, and applying the language in real-life situations. He is able to tailor lessons to individual student needs and makes complex concepts easier to understand. Luis also helped me greatly improve my French pronunciation, and I continue to use the skills I learned from him in my current French classes. Beyond his expertise, his passion for the language is both evident and inspiring, making learning French an enjoyable experience. I highly recommend choosing Luis as a French instructor!
Luis is my professor at NYU who is always nice and patient. He helped me build a solid foundation for my French studies. From Elementary I to Elementary II, he tried to let my classmates and me learn in an interesting and efficient way. He did well in balancing these two points. That’s why we all mastered French well and still remain interested in learning it. I would highly recommend choosing Luis as your French professor.
I have known Luis for years. He is very helpful and shows tremendous passion for the French language. He is also very patient.
I worked with Luis last academic year (Fall 2024 and Spring 2025) as both his professor and his supervisor as he taught across our elementary level program in New York University’s Department of French Literature, Thought, and Culture, where I serve as the Language Program Director. Luis is a motivated, creative, and caring educator, and he is sure to be a benefit to your students on Superprof.
Every fall in my department our second-year doctoral students start to teach for us; I run a week-long pre-semester training and orientation for them, and then they all attend my graduate seminar (Teaching French as a World Language) during their first semester teaching. Last year, for the first time, I was able to welcome first-year masters students from our “sister” program, the Institute of French Studies. I was excited to welcome an additional, new set of graduate students into our language program, but I admit that I had some trepidation about how this new cohort, relatively fresh out of their undergraduate programs with no graduate work under their belts, would fare. However, in Luis’s case, I needn’t have worried. From the start, he proved to be a more conscientious student than many of my doctoral students, diving into our readings, asking insightful questions and sharing even more insightful answers not only on the theory of language teaching but also the application of that theory to the nuts and bolts of the classroom. He was truly one of the standouts in the class, and I had high hopes for my classroom observations. I was not disappointed.
I observed Luis once in his Elementary French I class (in the fall of last year) and once in his Elementary French II class (in the spring of this year). His Elementary French I class was his first university-level French class to teach, and he did an admirable job. Of course, he made a few of the most common new-teacher mistakes –speaking a bit too much and spending a bit too much time on a given exercise – but overall, he taught a well-structured, cohesive, engaging lesson. He had his students up writing on the board, circulating and asking each other questions, listening to and commenting on on-the-street interviews from Paris, and all of this almost totally in French. When I observed Luis the following semester in his Elementary French II class, I impressed by the progress he had made as a teacher. The lesson was more engaging, better designed than before. In addition, Luis was now clearly placing a premium on meaningful communication, creating situations in which the students had to solve problems together in French, with grammar coming in as a support. When he did want to address grammar points, he succeeded in integrating more of a guided inductive approach, guiding his students through their hypotheses about and tests of the structures for that day (the passé compose). He had clearly learned and grown as a teacher from both what he had studied and discussed in our class, from my feedback, and from his own experience.
There is no doubt in my mind that Luis is an excellent young educator. Were I able to hire him to continue teaching with us, I would. He is passionate about education, which is evident not only from the care he takes in creating his lessons but also from the care with which he treats his students. Superprof would be lucky to count him among its tutors.View more recommendations
