About Emily
After achieving full marks in my English Literature GCSE, I began tutoring younger students to help with exam tips and tricks. Since then, I have been tutoring for 7+ years helping to support students across KS3 to A-Level. After achieving an A* in English Literature A-Level and a first class degree in English Literature from the Uni of York, I continue to enjoy helping students to achieve their potential in this subject, with strong subject expertise and a solid understanding of exam-board expectations!
I am halfway through my MSc in Speech and Language Therapy which has so-far developed my understanding of language, communication and granted me skills in supporting and encouraging young students. I have supported students with learning and communication differences (such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, DLD) which has only strengthened my ability in supporting a range of learning styles and approaches!
Across my years of experience, I have worked with a wide range of learners, those aiming to build confidence with certain texts or seeking to refine their essay writing skills, and those working towards securing high grades or achieving a confident pass! These experiences have given me a comprehensive understanding of curriculum demands and the academic skills students need to succeed.

I know how demanding, difficult (and dense!) English exams can feel, so I want to instill passion for the subject as well as helping students to navigate exam board expectations, master a great essay structure and feel confident going into their class tests, GCSEs or A-Levels. I always want students to feel comfortable and supported in my lessons, to be able to ask the same question over again or express their worries about a certain topic! My motto is: No question is EVER a silly question!
Being a student still myself, I really appreciate the stresses and overwhelm of studying. My goal is to make our lessons feel like a refreshing space where learning feels engaging rather than exhausting, without the pressures and demands of the classroom!
Previous tutees have described me as "patient, kind, full of encouragement and enthusiasm" and I aim to bring this energy into every lesson. I ensure each session is student-led, focusing on the tricky parts while playing to the student's strengths. I adapt my pace, content and approach depending on each student - no one is the same!
I know English isn't everyone's favourite subject and your interests might be in completely different areas - and that's okay! My lessons centre on the key things you actually need to know, plus strategies for handling tricky exam questions that make you panic! I am bubbly, enthusiastic and always ready to laugh - especially when we are wrestling with Shakespeare's wild metaphors!
