About Joe

Hi, I’m Joe – I’m a STEM tutor, but really, I help students navigate learning and understand things they thought they couldn’t. Back when I was doing my GCSEs, I asked a lot of questions. Honestly? Some of them probably sounded a bit silly. People laughed. Some teachers got annoyed. But I kept asking, because I genuinely wanted to understand what was going on — not just memorise steps, but actually get it. Eventually the laughter stopped. I began to understand maths and science really well and I was getting top grades in class tests. And then something unexpected happened… My classmates started asking ME to explain things to them. Turns out, most of them had the same questions as me. They just didn’t want to look silly by asking out loud. So they came to me. In fact, I became known for this. I was ‘the guy’ you go to for help with maths or science. You know how to plug numbers into the conservation of momentum equation but have no idea where it comes from, what it means, or when to use it? Afraid to ask in the middle of the third conservation of momentum lesson “what’s momentum?”, or “why are we doing this?” because you still don’t understand. Don’t worry. Just ask Joe. So, I explained things to them the way I saw them, and often, it helped. And usually there would be a moment when it ‘clicked’, and everything they had taken in so far in class actually made sense. And that’s how I started off as a tutor! It wasn’t official — I was just helping people around me who were stuck like I was. And somewhere along the way, I realised: this is what learning should feel like. Curious, messy, full of lightbulb moments — and not just cramming facts to regurgitate later. What I also learned from that time is that most students aren’t lazy or “bad at maths” — they just haven’t been shown how to learn actively. Most students, in school, are PASSIVE learners. They’re told things, they copy them down, and then they try to memorise them. It works... kind of. But it’s not efficient. And it’s definitely not enjoyable. I encourage something else — ACTIVE learning. Talk about the topic. Ask questions. Make mistakes. Struggle a bit. And eventually, really understand it. Not just enough to pass a test — enough to teach it back if you had to. That’s when you know you’ve got it. …but that is not the best part! The best part is practising the ability to learn – which is probably the most useful skill in life. I still learn this way myself. I studied mechanical engineering at university, then worked as a telecoms engineer in the railway industry for 3 years. Even now, I am still learning new things all the time, exploring new ideas, making mistakes, finding new ways to do things, and asking the same “silly” questions. And I love the journey. Since I’ve been a tutor for the past 3 years, many of my students have not only become more confident in the subject — they also see their grades improve naturally. I’ve worked with students who moved from a 4 to a 7 at GCSE, or from struggling with mechanics to scoring top marks in A-level physics. The biggest shift usually comes once they start to understand the material, not just memorise it. So, if you're someone who wants to stop just surviving school and start actually getting it — maths, physics, whatever obstacles you have — I’d love to help! Send me a message and let’s figure it out together. I currently have availability for summer 2025 catch up or prep for next year/resits. Joe

When I teach, I rarely instruct. My goal is to understand the student, lead by example, and encourage the student to take an active approach to learning with my guidance and support - not to tell them what to do. Many of my students just want quick answers. Or they think that if they answer more questions, they will improve in a subject. I have found that following instruction is not the same as learning. In fact, it's often counter-productive. Instruction can be found online, or given by teachers. But it does not equal learning. It's actually a short cut to get an answer to a question, but the student has learnt nothing about the subject, and would be equally confused when they face a question which requires a different instruction. It's all memory. It works for some, but it's extremely inefficient, and not conducive to learning. Many of my students have told me that my approach gives them more interest in the subject; a mental clarity that feels relieving; a low-stress environment to study (still challenging, but in a good way!). It also makes me happy to see them become more independent learners as they ask more questions and go on their own journey. I've seen them develop problem-solving skills too. They get better at reading questions correctly; giving educated guesses when unsure; picking up on clues in the questions. This approach is something I still use today, is essential for university or higher study, and is extremely useful in life and for personal development. Subjects I teach: Primary/Secondary: - Maths - Science GCSE (all exam boards): - Maths - Further Maths - Physics - Chemistry - Biology A-Level (all exam boards): - Maths - Further Maths - Physics
