About Alina

Transforming Geography from a 'subject' into a science. Achieve the A* with a professional industry perspective.
Most Geography students hit a "grade ceiling" because they rely on textbook memorization. At the GCSE and A-Level tier, examiners aren't looking for facts, they are looking for analytical depth, synoptic linking, and case study precision. As an Imperial College Geophysics graduate and a practicing Petrophysicist in the energy industry, I provide a level of technical expertise that few tutors can match. I bridge the gap between classroom theory and professional application.

What You Are Investing In:
When you book a session, you aren't just getting a tutor; you are gaining access to a professional academic toolkit designed for the Grade 9/A* trajectory:
Essay Architecture: I teach a modular "blueprint" for 9, 12, and 20-mark questions. We focus on Command Word mastery, ensuring every sentence specifically addresses 'Assessment Objectives' (AO1/2/3).

The Industry Edge: My work in Petrophysics gives me an expert-level understanding of Physical Geography (Tectonics, Glaciation, Carbon/Water Cycles, and Resource Management). I provide students with contemporary, real-world examples that make their essays stand out.
My previous role in emerging markets investment banking gives me an expert-level understanding of Development, Infrastructure, Urbanization and Globalisation.

Synoptic Mastery: I specialize in the "Paper 3" skillset, teaching students how to synthesize Human and Physical Geography to unlock the highest mark bands.

Data & GIS Specialist: I simplify the "Maths in Geography" and fieldwork components, turning data analysis from a hurdle into a scoring opportunity.

Academic & Professional Pedigree
Professional Role: Practicing Petrophysicist (Industry).

Education: Geophysics (BSc/MSci) from Imperial College London (Global Top 10).

Track Record: A* in A-Level Geography (Edexcel) | 96% in GCSE Geography.

Teaching Experience: Selected Teaching Assistant at Imperial College, delivering 50+ lectures in technical Earth Science, Physics and Mathematics to undergraduates.

My tutorials are designed for ambitious students aiming to bridge the gap from a Grade 6 to a 9 or from a B to an A*. I don’t just "go over" the textbook; I provide a professional framework for mastering the complexities of the modern Geography specification.
1. Elite Scholarship & Entrance Preparation
I have extensive experience preparing students for the most rigorous academic assessments in the UK, including:
The Eton College King’s Scholarship: Navigating the specialized, high-level Geography and General papers.
Westminster School Challenge: Developing the lateral thinking and sophisticated essay writing required for elite entry.
11+/13+ Common Entrance: Helping students secure places at top-tier London schools (St Paul’s, King’s Wimbledon, Wycombe Abbey) by mastering both the Physical and Human Geography modules.
2. The "Examiner-First" Methodology
Geography is unique in that you can know the content perfectly and still fail to achieve an A* if your technique is flawed. Every session is structured around Command Word Precision:
The "PEEL-Level" Upgrade: We move beyond basic paragraph structures to sophisticated PEEAL (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Analysis, Link) chains that secure high-level AO3 marks (Evaluation).
The Modular Essay Blueprint: I provide templates for 12, 15, and 20-mark questions, teaching students how to write with the "synoptic flair" that examiners award most highly.
3. Exclusive Industry-Grade Resources
Standard textbook examples are often overused and lack the depth required for the highest marks. As a practicing Petrophysicist, I provide:
The "Advanced Case Study Bank": Access to contemporary, data-rich examples (e.g., Tectonic mitigation in Japan vs. Nepal, Carbon sequestration in the North Sea, or Urban regeneration in Stratford) that give my students a distinct edge.
Geophysical Insights: For Physical Geography (Glaciation, Tectonics, Cycles), I use my professional background to explain the "Why" behind the "What," making complex physical processes intuitive rather than just a memory exercise.
4. Technical & Interactive Environment
I provide a premium online experience that often surpasses the efficacy of in-person learning:
Shared Digital Whiteboard: We build essay plans and annotate complex diagrams (like hydrological cycles or atmospheric cells) together in real-time.
Post-Lesson Support: Students receive a digital copy of all whiteboard notes and annotated mark schemes immediately after every session.
Specifications & Level
A-Level Specialist (Edexcel): Deep-dive expertise in Tectonics, Glaciation, Coastal Landscapes, Regeneration, Migration/Identity/Sovereignty, and the Carbon/Water Cycles.
GCSE/IGCSE (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, CIE): Comprehensive coverage of all Human and Physical modules.
NEA / Coursework Mentoring: Strategic guidance on data collection, GIS mapping, and statistical analysis for the Independent Investigation.

Details

My standard rate starts from £60 per hour for online lessons. Rates may vary depending on the subject, level of difficulty, and scheduling requirements. I offer discounts for lessons booked in pairs or in blocks, as well as referral-based discounts for families who recommend me to others.

I am happy to mark homework or practice papers outside of lesson time, but please note that this is charged separately. The marking fee ranges from £1 to £5 depending on the length and complexity of the work. This allows me to provide detailed, constructive feedback while keeping lessons focused and efficient.

While I can occasionally travel to students' homes in the London area (particularly Kensington, Chelsea, and Fulham), I strongly prefer online tutoring due to the flexibility it offers — especially for international students and those with busy schedules.

Find out more about Alina

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in STEM was driven by a desire to understand the Earth’s systems, a journey that led to Natural Resources Investment Banking at J.P. Morgan, and later as a Petrophysicist at one of the oil majors. I began tutoring to bridge the gap between classroom theory and its high-stakes application in industry. I realised that students benefit most from seeing how Chemistry, Physics, Geography and Maths converge in the global professional landscape.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I specialise in high-impact academic milestones:

Admissions: Having taught at Imperial College, I lead 8-hour intensives for Oxbridge and Imperial interviews.
13+ & School Scholarship: Expert support for Scholarship papers (Eton, Winchester, Westminster) and ISEB CE 13+ more generally.
GCSE & A-Level: Focused coaching in Maths, Physics, Chemistry, and Geography, emphasising the 'first principles' needed for top grades, while providing additional exam technique support.
Degree Level: Professional support for Geology and Geophysics undergraduates.

I focus on subjects where I can provide a unique 'insider's perspective' from the worlds of academia and industry.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I was inspired by a professor who viewed Science as a detective story, a puzzle to be solved using data. This shaped my approach both while teaching at Imperial and in my current industry role. Whether I am tutoring a GCSE student or a University undergraduate, I emulate that style: teaching students to analyse complex information and think from first principles.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Precision, professional rigor, and adaptability. To be effective at the Imperial or 13+ Scholarship level, you must be able to simulate the pressure of an interview or scholarship exam while providing the technical scaffolding to succeed. I bring the same discipline and 'results-first' mindset to my students that I bring to my professional career.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

In my professional life as a Petrophysicist, a small error in a data model can have massive real-world consequences. I share this with my GCSE and A-Level students to show that Physics and Maths aren't just 'schoolwork', they are the tools we use to navigate and understand the Earth's resources. When students realise the practical stakes of what they are learning, their engagement and accuracy skyrocket.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

The biggest challenge for students is the 'Conceptual Leap' between academic levels. Many struggle when rote learning no longer suffices for A-Level or School/ University interviews. My speciality is helping students navigate this transition, moving toward the sophisticated, integrated thinking required at institutions like Imperial or in high-level technical careers.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I am deeply passionate about the 'Academic Transition', helping students navigate the jump from one level to the next. Whether it's a 13-year-old moving into a competitive scholarship environment, a GCSE student building the foundations for A-Level, or an undergraduate tackling Degree-level Geology, I love witnessing that specific moment when a difficult concept finally 'clicks.'

My own background in Petrophysics and industry science fuels my passion for showing students that what they learn in the classroom has a massive real-world impact. Beyond the results, my goal is to spark a genuine curiosity for how the world works, which is the ultimate key to long-term success.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I provide a rare bridge between the classroom, academia, and the professional industry. By teaching across the spectrum, from 13+ Scholarships and GCSEs to Degree-level Geology, I don't just help students pass exams; I teach them how to think like specialists.

Having taught at Imperial College London and currently working as a Petrophysicist, I bring a level of technical rigor and 'real-world' context that is rare in private tutoring. I specialise in the 'high-stakes' moments of a student's life, helping them build the analytical mindset and professional discipline required to excel at top-tier institutions and in their future careers. I am not just a tutor; I am a mentor for the next generation of STEM leaders.
