About Caleb

Hi! My name is Caleb Xiao and I am currently undertaking a Bachelor of Biomedical Science degree as part of the Biomedicine Undergraduate Scholar's Program at Monash University. I graduated from John Monash Science School in 2024 with an ATAR of 99.40 and developed a great passion for chemistry and science as a whole during my three years there.

My mission is to help your children discover the beauty and intricacies of science and what it offers in terms of our perspectives of the universe we live in. I believe that everyone can do well in science subjects (your child is no exception!) and that, more importantly, doing so will open up a new perspective on how to analyse the world. I wish to guide your child's learning and help them experience the same passion and excitement I have for these subjects! Through our lessons, they will build the necessary knowledge, skills, and (most importantly) academic confidence to excel throughout their schooling journey!

The field of chemistry is often portrayed almost as if it is magic. We see brilliant explosions of colour and majesty stem from the way atoms and compounds interact to produce spectacular and practically beneficial reactions - ones we harness in our day-to-day lives. An ability to interpret chemical understanding opens one's eyes to a fascinating world that surrounds our every moment, the rules of which govern a diverse plethora of aspects within our natural world. It is no wonder that chemistry is a staple in many schooling curriculums, such as the VCE course.

Despite this, many often loathe chemistry - treating it with much disdain and bewilderment. Why? Because chemistry is seldom taught in a way that presents it as accessible to a general audience! The nature of chemistry means that it is often very difficult to visualise its related theory, a factor which exacerbates a hatred of chemistry when improper teaching fails to explain how each concept in chemistry is linked. I've seen this considerably in the VCE system and is the reason why many kids struggle to grasp the theory which is taught. There have been many times where a teacher is unable to explain the link between chemical concepts and students are simply taught to memorise a concept without learning how it is integrated with the rest of their knowledge. Consequently, they fail to apply this knowledge - instead regurgitating it onto a paper with no understanding of what they are writing. This impacts their grades and destroys their academic confidence in the subject - causing them to give up and consign chemistry to the "worst subjects" category...

My mission is to change that. Your kids deserve a solid education in chemistry that grants them a proper understanding of chemical knowledge that ultimately boosts their academic performance AND confidence! My students will learn how each piece of theory they learn fits into a wonderous web of interlocking concepts and understand the relationships between them - boosting their ability to apply their knowledge to novel and familiar questions. With a raw 45 in VCE Chemistry Units 3&4, I will ensure your child receives tutoring assistance that sets them up beautifully to achieve the BEST in their studies of chemistry - particularly at the VCE level.

We'll utilise engaging resources (which I will provide) to encourage active learning and reinforcement of key knowledge, with most of the teaching being done through one-on-one lessons where I will cater my lessons to suit the needs and learning style of your child as I get to know them to make sure they get the best education possible! The warm and friendly environment of our lessons - whether they are in your own home, in a public place (e.g., a library), or online - will quell any anxieties or nerves your children may have, encouraging them to engage with curiosity in their learning and to ask hard-hitting questions (if they stump me, it'll show how intelligent they are!)

Their knowledge will be continuously established and retained through active recall and repetition of previously learned content that I will provide to make sure their brains soak up as much information as possible! If they have their own school-supplied resources that they wish to review, or if you/your child have any specific topics of chemistry you/they want to cover, we can go over those too! I want to ensure your child is not burdened by tuition but emboldened by it to achieve academic success!

As parents, you are just as essential in your child's learning journey! Any suggestions or queries you have will most certainly be considered, and I will provide you with consistent support and updates regarding your child's process and learning. Parent cooperation is crucial in the academic success of their children, so rest assured that you won't be consigned to the backseat but will work alongside your child and I to craft the BEST learning experiences as possible!

Important information about my lessons:
- While I charge by the hour, I am happy to run lessons that go for over an hour (e.g., 2-hour lessons) upon request. The default length, however, is 1 hour.

- I am willing to meet with students who live in the Vermont South area or students who can travel to Monash University. Those who live further away can also attend lessons through Webex for a cheaper hourly rate.

- These lessons are aimed to be for children ranging from primary school (Prep to Year 6) as well as secondary students up to Year 12

- Please note this is not tutoring for selective school entry exams. I will not be providing any resources or teaching catered to those exams.

I am happy to discuss any of the terms mentioned above, so please don't hesitate to contact me via email or SMS!

Details

Below are some details regarding my tuition rates:

- All prices are negotiable to an extent. If you are experiencing financial hardships, discounts can be given and fees can be waived in special circumstances.

- All payments will be made independently of the SuperProf website via bank transfers or in cash. This is due to the commission fee SuperProf charges. By issuing payments externally, I can keep fees low for all students. Alternative forms of payment can also be negotiated.

- I will send invoices to seal the purchase of lesson hours. These invoices will include my bank details which you can use to transfer payment for these lesson hours. If a refund is to be issued, please present this invoice to streamline the refund process.

- Lesson hours can be bought in packs (e.g., 5 hours for an upfront payment of $200). However, refunds will not be issued if the student fails to attend a lesson paid for by these hours without a reasonable excuse. Refunds in full will only be issued if a legitimate reason is given for the absence.

- The extra $10/hr for in-person lessons is to account for travel time and associated costs.

If you have any queries regarding my prices, please contact me via email at (concealed information) or SMS at (concealed information).
