As a former student I can say with certainty: homework, and school, can be really, really boring. Reading and writing are stressful when there is a deadline, and that stress is what causes avoidance and 'boredom'. Offering that level of understanding is crucial - sometimes there just simply isn't a way to make homework fun. There is, however, always a way to make it interesting - and interest overwhelms any boredom/avoidance/stress. I pick up on what the student is struggling with and build my approach from there.
