About Jay
I play guitar in a folk group and in a Jazz trio, and use it frequently for my composing (my specialism in university). This is alongside a number of bands I play the trumpet in, and my wealth of experience playing percussion in Samba bands across the country.
I have a wealth of experienced working with children teaching samba drumming and art, in deprived areas of Liverpool where barriers to these art-forms are high. I also work as a youth worker, and through this am learning the best ways to engage teenagers in informal education, thus I am a very good communicator for people of any background and ability. I would be happy to negotiate prices for anybody finding themselves in a difficult financial situation at the moment.
Through this experience I have an enhanced DBS, and am a very calm and friendly teacher.

I am passionate about teaching children and adults who are looking to learn guitar from a beginners or intermediate level, and about maintaining peoples interest in the instrument beyond any individual teacher. My methods then involve tailoring my lessons to my students to ensure that they are focussed on their interests. This is something I am able to do having branched out into many genres of music, from Jazz guitar, to rock, to folk, and to classical. On top of this, I am a multi-instrumentalist, also playing trumpet, and a variety of percussion instruments.
My strength is in this breadth, making me very apt at developing students musicality as a whole, helping students to understand what distinguishes the guitar, and the genres they are interested in, from other instruments and other genres, and thus helping people to lean into their strengths, and strengthen their weaknesses.
Most importantly, I am an educator who cares hugely about effectively communicating information and fostering interest, as the main barriers people possess in learning an intrument or music more broadly is not maintaining the momentum in their study that they achieved initially. I am particularly suited to this through my experience leading workshops in music and art in schools and on courses, and my work as a youth worker, which has led to my emphasis on a more collaborative approach to learning.
