  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My passion for my chosen field and private tutoring began in university. I initially started with face-to-face tutorials with just one student, even though the compensation was lower than the cost of travel. Later on, the number of my students increased. I even engage engage in online tutoring, where I interact with numerous students from around the world. The lessons I gained from that experience were invaluable. My interest grew stronger as I acquired practical experience and at the same time I learned more from the subject I teach. As I accumulated practical experience, my passion intensified, bringing immense satisfaction from aiding others in understanding complex concepts through private tutoring. The most gratifying moments arose when parents or students expressed gratitude, recognizing the positive impact of my tutoring on their child's learning progress and improvement.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach Math to students from Kindergarten to Senior High School. For young learners, I employ gamified lessons to cater to their shorter attention spans and challenge the common perception that mathematics is often seen as uninteresting and dull. In the case of middle and high school students, I specialize in teaching Algebra and Geometry, along with Trigonometry. While I am capable of teaching basic concepts in Statistics and Probability, I have a particular fondness for Algebra and Geometry.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Certainly, I had several role models that inspired me. Their passion for the subject and their innovative teaching methods greatly influenced my own approach to education.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Being a good tutor involves possessing a combination of skills, qualities, and characteristics.
For effective teaching, it's essential that a tutor possesses a comprehensive understanding of the subject they are teaching, enabling them to convey concepts with clarity.
A good tutor should be able to adapt their communication style to the needs of the student in order to convey information in a clear and understandable way.
Every student learns at their own pace, and a good tutor should be patient and understanding, especially when a student is struggling to grasp a concept.
A good tutor should be flexible and adaptable, tailoring their approach to suit the individual needs of each student, considering that students have different learning styles and preferences.
A genuine passion for teaching and a desire to help students succeed can make a significant impact. Enthusiasm is often contagious and can inspire students to engage more with the subject.
Encouraging and motivating students, especially during challenging times, is a key quality. A good tutor helps students build confidence in their abilities.
Planning and organizing lessons, keeping track of student progress, and managing time efficiently are important aspects of effective tutoring.
Attentive listening is crucial for understanding a student's difficulties, concerns, and learning style. This enables the tutor to provide targeted support.
An effective tutor should be a keen listener, attuned to comprehend students' challenges, concerns, and individual learning styles.
A proficient tutor ought to offer feedback in a positive and constructive way, emphasizing both strengths and areas for improvement.
Tutors need to possess an open-minded and respectful attitude toward cultural and individual differences, fostering a positive learning environment.
A good tutor recognizes that learning is a lifelong process. Staying updated on educational trends, teaching methods, and the subject matter itself is important for delivering quality instruction.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I once worked with a student grappling with algebraic equations. To make the abstract concepts more tangible, I incorporated familiar objects like apples or images of flowers to represent variables. 'a' stood for apples, and 'b' represented flowers. This use of familiar items proved instrumental in helping the student grasp complex mathematical ideas. Witnessing the student's eyes light up with understanding highlighted the significant impact of this creative approach. It served as a powerful reminder that simplicity and creativity can be the keys to unlocking comprehension in challenging subjects.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

As a Math tutor, I've encountered various challenges. One common difficulty involves addressing diverse learning styles. Tailoring my teaching approach to accommodate students with different levels of understanding and varied learning preferences requires continuous adjustment and innovation. Another challenge is fostering a positive attitude toward mathematics. Many students perceive the subject as challenging or intimidating, leading to a lack of enthusiasm. Breaking down these barriers and instilling confidence in students to approach math with curiosity and a growth mindset is an ongoing effort.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

Yes, my particular passion lies in teaching, especially in the realm of mathematics. The joy I derive from helping students understand complex concepts and witnessing their academic growth is truly fulfilling.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)?

I believe it's a combination of my deep subject knowledge, a commitment to creating engaging and personalized learning experiences, and a genuine passion for seeing my students succeed.
