About Rory
I have experience tutoring high school students in both English Language Arts and Social Studies, and I enjoy helping students feel more comfortable with subjects they may initially find overwhelming. I currently hold a 3.7 GPA, and I am especially confident with writing, grammar, reading comprehension, essay development, research, and written Social Studies responses.
I believe tutoring works best when students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes. I aim to create a friendly, encouraging environment while still keeping lessons focused and productive. I am patient, dependable, and happy to explain something in several different ways until it makes sense.
I also understand that every student has different strengths, goals, and learning styles, so I do not use a one-size-fits-all approach. Whether a student needs regular academic support, help preparing for an exam, feedback on an essay, or simply a little more confidence in the classroom, I tailor my support to what will be most useful to them.
Above all, I want students to leave a lesson feeling more capable, more confident, and less intimidated by the work in front of them.

My approach to tutoring is patient, flexible, and focusing on helping students actually understand the material rather than memorizing. Starting with identifying a student's needs and what they're already confident in, what they may be struggling with and how they learn best. From there we can determine what learning strategies work best.
Typically a lesson might include reviewing current course work, and identifying areas of struggle, then working through them together before independent practice. For English, I can help with reading comprehension, essay planning, grammar, editing, creative writing, and improving overall confidence in written work. For Social Studies, I can help students understand key concepts, organize information, prepare for tests, and strengthen written responses.
I try to make lessons feel approachable and low-pressure. I understand that students often know more than they think they do, and sometimes they simply need a concept explained in a different way. I am happy to slow down, try different methods, and work at the student's pace rather than making them feel rushed or embarrassed for needing extra help.
My lessons are best suited to junior high and high school students, particularly those looking for support in English Language Arts, Social Studies, essay writing, assignments, studying, and general academic confidence. I can also work with students who want extra practice or help strengthening their writing skills outside of a specific class.
