About Emma
IES de Astorga, Language Assistant: October 2016- May 2017 I have just completed my compulsory year abroad in Spain, where I worked as a Language Assistant (Auxiliar de Conversaciόn) in a secondary school in a northern town in Spain. There, I worked 12 hours a week teaching English as a foreign language to students ranging from the ages of 12-17. Each week, I prepared my own lessons, marked work, and helped other teachers in their lessons. The varied ages of the students meant I had to adjust my lessons and teaching styles accordingly, as did the varied skill levels in English, meaning that some of my lessons were taught mostly in Spanish.
As I am a sociable, friendly and determined person, I enjoyed the challenge of often having to come up with ideas on the spot if lessons weren't working, as well as socialising with not just the pupils, but the teachers as well. I was able to build a strong relationship with the members of staff and students, all of which I did in my second language. This has helped to increase my confidence levels and abilities to relate and socialise with a range of different people.
As I am reliable and happy to work on short notice, I did not mind that I often had to step in to take lessons if one of the teachers was absent.

Having just worked in Spain for a year in a Secondary School, I learnt a lot about how to deliver effective and engaging lessons to my pupils. Both the students and me loved playing games to make the lessons more interesting (even though language learning is of course very fun anyway!) and we developed a fantastic working relationship.
It's important to establish a students level of Spanish, and to, from there, develop lessons accordingly. As I took my GCSE's 5 years ago, and my A Level's only 3 years ago, I am very much aware of the pressure of exams and also of exactly what the examiners are looking for!
