About Lucy
After 20 years of running departments and teaching in schools and colleges I have gone back to school! I am currently working on my PhD, so I know how challenging it can be to be a student, but I still enjoy teaching, so I also make use of my teaching experience by working as a tutor. My experience of running different courses over the years means that I know the importance of tailoring lessons to the specific exam board you are studying, and I am afraid that I will often set homework and assess your learning in a variety of ways. Biology is a very content-heavy subject, and there isn't usually time for everything to be covered in lessons at school or college, so I am here to help with that. I also know that Biology is often harder than people expect it to be, and I can explain the tricky parts in ways you may not have considered before. Crucially, I will also ensure that you enjoy your lessons, and you are likely to learn interesting and weird Biology facts that you can share with family and friends.

My approach to tutoring is to be led by the students! You are all different, and what one student needs is different to another. Generally, lessons are 1h, but there are times that a longer session is more appropriate for the more technical A level material. In my experience, however, most students want the details of Biological topics explained to them clearly and in detail, with plenty of opportunity for discussion and links to the real world to make the material come to life. My first-class Microbiology degree and experience as a researcher in industry make me great at this. I make use of videos and interactive materials, but also good old diagram drawing and note-taking with my mobile whiteboard! I am happy to travel locally to Amersham, Bucks, or teach online via Google Meet and have worked as a tutor alongside being a classroom teacher and an examiner for around 20 years. I have never had a student cancel my services, all of my tutoring experiences have finished when they have completed the qualifications they are studying for. I specialise in A level and GCSE Biology, but also have experience of Combined Science and am happy to provide lessons for KS3 Science too. I also have experience of Science-related BTEC courses like Applied Science and the Physiology parts of some of the PE courses, plus can provide lessons in cell biology and some other undergraduate modules.

Details
£50 per hour for GCSE, £60 for A level online. Travel costs will be added for in-person lessons in the local area depending on where you are. I offer a free initial 30-minute online lesson so that I can meet students and parents, and get a clear idea of specific needs.
