About Tess
Hi, I'm Tess! I recently graduated from Durham University with a degree in Physics, and have been speaking Irish fluently since I was five years old.
I was educated through Irish from primary school onwards and spent all of secondary school at an Irish-speaking boarding school in the Gaeltacht, where I developed a real love for the language.
I know that Irish can seem like a difficult language to learn, so my main approach is to first build confidence. I like to pay particular attention to the oral exam, as it's worth 40% overall, and having received full marks in the oral myself, I really understand what is necessary to achieve a good grade.
Through my previous tutoring and childcare experience, I've learned the importance of being patient, approachable and adapting to the individual. I want students to feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and telling me when they don't understand something.
Whether someone wants to improve their written exam performance, prepare for the oral exam, or just learn Irish recreationally, I'd love to help.

My approach to tutoring is patient and encouraging. I think it's particularly important when learning Irish to feel comfortable speaking the language and making mistakes, rather than worrying about getting everything right straight away.
I offer online Irish lessons for students of all levels, from primary school through to Junior Cycle and Leaving Certificate, as well as for complete beginners. Lessons can cover grammar, reading, writing, listening comprehension, exam technique and oral Irish, depending on what the student needs most. For Junior Cycle and Leaving Cert students, I can focus lessons specifically around the curriculum, working on the areas where they can make the biggest improvements.
Oral Irish is a particular strength and something I really enjoy teaching. I can provide structured Leaving Cert oral preparation, including practising the different sections of the exam, improving answers, correcting mistakes and building vocabulary, while also encouraging more natural conversation in Irish.
For students who are less exam-focused, I would also love to offer conversational Irish lessons. These can be more relaxed and centred around developing vocabulary, fluency and confidence through speaking one-on-one.
Whether a student wants focused exam preparation, help with a particular area of the curriculum, regular support throughout the school year, or simply greater confidence speaking Irish, I will tailor the lessons to what they want to achieve.

Worked alongside Tess while at Durham University physics; she combines a background in physics pedagogy through her degree with an empathetic approach to teaching that makes her really effective with young people.
