About Luca

Ciao! I’m Luca — a bilingual Italian–English tutor from Calabria, and the course instructor of an Italian-learning startup. I help English speakers learn real, practical Italian for travel, daily life, and moving to Italy.

I specialise in teaching useful, everyday Italian — the kind you need to order food, ask for directions, meet locals, make friends, and feel at home in Italy.

I also run a social media page where I share Italian culture, expressions, travel tips and lifestyle advice. My teaching is friendly, patient and conversation-based. If you love Italy, you’ll feel right at home in my lessons.

Whether you’re preparing for a holiday, thinking about retiring abroad, or simply passionate about Italian culture, I’ll help you speak more naturally and confidently.

I love meeting learners who dream of Italy — and I’d be happy to guide you.

  • # **1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?**

    I speak Italian fluently because of my origins. I grew up in a bilingual household: my mother is a native English speaker and my father is Italian. Although we lived in Italy most of my life, the language of communication at home was always English, so I naturally developed native-level fluency in both languages.
    This bilingual background shaped the way I teach today — because I understand exactly how English speakers think, what they struggle with, and how to guide them into Italian effectively and naturally.
  • # **2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?**

    Dante Alighieri is certainly the historical symbol of the Italian language, but on a personal level, I believe **the Italian grandmother** represents the heart of Italian culture.
    I’ve grown up seeing this warmth very closely — my own nonna lives in the same building as me, just like many traditional southern Italian families where each floor belongs to a different family member.
    Her generosity, hospitality, her insistence on feeding everyone, and her way of bringing people together perfectly embody the values that make Italian culture so special.
  • # **3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?**

    I love how warm and social Italian is.
    Expressions like *“Non ti preoccupare”* (“don’t worry”) capture the relaxed, reassuring style that is so typical of Italian communication.
    I also love our traditions around food and gathering — long family lunches, shared meals, and the way conversations flow for hours. These habits show how deeply Italians value connection, warmth, and enjoying life together.
  • # **4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?**

    Italian matters to me because it’s not just a language — it’s part of my identity, my roots, and my everyday life.
    Speaking Italian means understanding the humour, culture, warmth, and rhythm of a way of life that I deeply love.
    As a bilingual tutor, I love helping English speakers discover this world, whether it’s for travel, cultural interest, or moving to Italy.
  • # **5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?**

    The main difficulty for English speakers is learning to **think** in Italian rather than translate.
    Italian has expressive grammar, strong pronunciation patterns, and a different rhythm compared to English.
    What helps most is practical immersion:
    * speaking from day one
    * learning real phrases for real situations
    * listening to native Italian
    * understanding cultural context
    * building confidence through relaxed conversation
    When lessons are practical and enjoyable, Italian becomes much easier — and incredibly rewarding!
  • # **6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.**

    Growing up bilingual, I often mixed the two languages without realising. One mistake I made for years in English was saying *“What hour is it?”* instead of *“What time is it?”*, because in Italian we say *“Che ore sono?”*.
    I only discovered much later that this was incorrect English, and it made me realise how naturally our first language influences the way we think in another one.
    This experience taught me that mistakes are normal and even essential in learning. Today, I try to pass this mindset on to my students: mistakes show that you’re engaging with the language and moving forward.
  • # **7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?**

    Travel plays a central role in my teaching and my connection to Italian. I organise trips for British travellers who want to visit Italy, and I’ve seen how magical it is when they can speak with locals.
    The moment a learner successfully has a small conversation — ordering food, asking for advice, or simply chatting — it opens a completely new world for them.
    For people preparing to move or retire to Italy, speaking the language is essential to truly enjoy the culture, feel included, and build meaningful relationships.
    These experiences have shown me what students really need: practical, everyday Italian for real life.
  • # **8) What makes you a Superprof in language?**

    I believe what makes me a Superprof is the combination of my **bilingual background**, my **practical teaching method**, and my **ability to make Italian simple, friendly and useful** for English speakers.
    I specialise in teaching Italian for travel, everyday life, and relocation — focusing on real conversation rather than complicated theory.
    I’m also the main instructor of an Italian-learning startup and I create cultural and language content on social media.
    Above all, I care about my students’ goals. I create a relaxed, enjoyable environment that builds confidence, motivation, and natural fluency!
