About Amiria
Amiria Butler (Ngātiwai, Ngāti Awa, Ngāpuhi) is a Māori cultural practitioner based on Turtle Island (the United States). She is the founder and director of Learn Māori Abroad, a global organization dedicated to sharing Māori language, performing arts, and cultural practices with learners both in the U.S. and internationally. Originally from Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland), Aotearoa (New Zealand), Amiria was immersed in Te Ao Māori (Māori culture) from an early age. She studied te reo Māori (the Māori language) by correspondence during secondary school, where she also led her school’s kapa haka (traditional Māori performance) group. Amiria continued her academic journey at the University of Auckland, majoring in Māori language, culture, and performance in her Bachelor of Arts degree and specializing in Māori Land Law for her Bachelor of Law degree. Amiria relocated to Turtle Island in 2009 and is currently based on the lands of the Chickasaw Nation (Memphis, TN). She has shared Māori language and culture with a wide range of organizations, including Yale, UCLA, University of Hawai’i, University of Washington, San Francisco City College, University of Indiana, Pacific Island Ethnic Arts Museum, Warner Bros Studios, Sony, Kiwis in LA, Tourism New Zealand, Penguin Random House, YMCA, and many more. Her work has been featured in several publications and media outlets, including Newshub, Whakaata Māori (Māori TV), Te Ao Māori News, Radio NZ, Aio The Podcast, and KEXP Radio Seattle. Amiria is also currently pursuing a Master’s degree in Indigenous Studies at the University of Auckland. To learn more about Amiria's work, watch her TEDx talk or visit her Learn Māori Abroad website. Ngā mihi!
