About Catherine
I’m Catherine, a friendly and dedicated viola and violin tutor with a strong academic and musical background. I graduated with First-Class Honors from the Royal Academy of Music and am currently completing my postgraduate studies there, studying with Hélène Clément. I have five years of teaching experience and enjoy working with students of all ages and levels, from complete beginners to diploma candidates. I aim to create a relaxed, supportive, and well-structured learning environment where students feel comfortable, motivated, and confident as they develop both their technique and their love of music.

Hi, I’m Catherine, a viola and violin tutor and a First-Class Honours graduate of the Royal Academy of Music. My teaching approach is student-centred, encouraging, and carefully structured, with a strong focus on healthy technique, musical understanding, and confidence-building. I adapt each lesson to the individual student, whether they are just starting out, working towards graded exams, or preparing advanced repertoire. I believe learning should be enjoyable as well as effective, and I help students develop both solid technical foundations and expressive musical skills.
A typical lesson with Catherine begins with warm-ups and technical exercises suited to the student’s level, helping to build good habits and ease of playing. We then work on repertoire in detail, focusing on tone, intonation, rhythm, and musical interpretation. I also guide students on how to practise effectively between lessons, setting clear and achievable goals. Sight-reading, scales, and music theory are incorporated where appropriate, always in a way that supports the student’s overall progress.
What sets Catherine apart as a tutor is a combination of strong academic training and real teaching experience. As a First-Class Honours graduate of the Royal Academy of Music with five years of teaching experience, I have worked with a wide range of students and learning styles. My lessons are supportive and patient, creating a positive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and making progress at their own pace. I place particular emphasis on good technique to promote long-term development and prevent tension or injury.
Lessons with Catherine are suitable for children and adults of all ages, from complete beginners to advanced and diploma-level students. I teach students learning for enjoyment as well as those pursuing GCSE, A-Level, ABRSM or Trinity exams, and higher-level performance goals. Every lesson is tailored to the individual, ensuring that students feel motivated, supported, and confident in their musical journey.
