About Gerson
I am Gerson Vargas, I’m a photographer.
Im a Costarican photographer based in New York, graduated from the legendary Cinecitta Studios in Rome, my background is rooted in cinematography and visual storytelling; Im blessed with a profound understanding of composition, lightining and the art of capturing moments.
From 2011 to 2018 I served as a photo editor for Costa Rica’s La Republica demostraiting my comprehension of the editorial process and ability to curate impactful visual narratives.
Honored with the 2016 Washington DC Photoweek Fontagro Award and more recently; graduated from the Documentary Practice and Visual Journalism program at the prestigious International Center of Photography with my long term project Hit the Lights (Around the Underground) an exploration of the undeground music scene in New York City.

Every individual is unique, and a method that works for someone might not work for someone else. Therefore, every lesson will be designed based on your skill level and your interests.
-You'll learn how to get familiar with your camera (you'll learn all the menu functions)
-You'll learn techniques to fully control the exposure so you don't miss your shot (aperture, shutter and ISO)
-You'll learn to read light (field work so you'll be able to recognize a 'good light' situation, natural and artificial)
-You'll get real life assigments (practice, practice, practice)
-You'll learn to properly store and then retouch your material.
-You'll learn the basic maintenance of your gear.
I believe photography is an experiential process where there are no wrong answers, through a laidback and freestyle approach, and by aquiring realistic simple tools, every student should be able to fully understand and take control of their image making in no time.
The program is designed for the beginner student and the photo aficionado that wishes to take their photo skills to a new level.
