About Amelie

My tutoring experience began when I started the Duke of Edinburgh Award and chose tutoring as my form of volunteering. I set up a Maths support group for students in the lower years to help guide them through their work. At first this began by students bringing in worksheets with questions they had struggled with that we could work through and later developed into one on one lessons where we would re-teach students certain topics. In year 8 I joined Debate Mate, being tutored by the senior debaters who prepared my team for the Novice Cup which we won later that year. And we soon took over the roles of mentors for the younger debaters, teaching them how to work together to formulate ideas and to then structure their individual points into fully developed arguments. This required an understanding of the most effective techniques for each debater to use, so we as mentors took turns to teach them our techniques based on our specialities in a given position. I myself was the last speaker in most competitions, a position in which summarising points of your fellow teammates alongside rebuttals of your competitors points are key. This meant I focused on teaching younger students how to form counter arguments to the opposition while supporting their own group's argument. In year 12, the opportunity to tutor came up again, as my school offered me a place to tutor GCSE students in the core subjects they were struggling in as it came up to exam season. With my strengths lying particularly in Maths and English, I put myself forward for the role and ended up teaching a group of girls in English on a bi-weekly basis. They would come to the session prepared with exam styled texts to analyse. During GCSEs I found open discussion in class was particularly helpful in helping me formulate new ideas and thinking outside the box, as the mixture between supporting questions from my teacher, ideas from my peers, and the independence of coming up with my own analysis strengthened my analytic abilities so that I was able to answer exam questions independently later on. This led me to create a similar environment in these sessions, where we would individually read the text to begin with and the girls would write down any initial interpretations they had of it. I would then ask them to share whatever they had come up with and we would go through these ideas, developing them into stronger points. I found that they often needed thought-provoking questions to get to this point, something that after a few sessions I asked them to come up with for each other so that they would then be able to do for themselves when looking to form ideas about new texts in the future. I also helped develop their writing skills in terms of structure, by showing them what was most successful for each question and often finding or coming up with model answers to give them as an example of what they were working towards. Moreover, I occasionally taught a year 11 student Maths who had a good understanding of the syllabus but often struggled when it came to more advanced questions. I was more than happy to review the content they had gone through in lesson and help her apply it to her homework. I found that she struggled with beginning questions that appeared long and worked on helping her break down the different sections of the questions and the steps required to find the right answer. Overall, I really enjoy learning about Maths and how it can be used to look at the world and explain its workings, and it is the relief and satisfaction gained from finally solving a complex problem that makes me love maths and want to share it with others through tutoring. I am also fascinated by the workings of English Literature and find writing and talking about it the perfect way to discover new ideas and insights into it. Aiming to engage students and cater to their different styles of learning in order to help them engage and understand the subjects they need help with, I believe I would make a good tutor.

I believe it is important to begin by asking students to describe anything they do understand about a topic before we begin, to gain a basic understanding of where their strengths and weaknesses lie. Then go on by taking them through a simple explanation of the topic and teaching them the skills required, with some simple supporting questions to show them how the skills can be applied. An educational online game may then be useful in engaging them and strengthening their skills until they feel confident enough to try a more difficult question. We would then complete a question or two together before I let them try some on their own.
