About Olivia
I volunteered to help tutor a GCSE Year 11 student English Literature for 2 hours once or twice a week. I would make lesson plans, activities and exam style questions. I would also mark and set challenging homework. Furthermore, I would learn new exam syllabus and texts and create content which followed the recommendations of the exam board. Activities which I created included word searches, essay plans and knowledge checking style questions. I also would communicate with the students’ parents and set areas of improvement. The student achieved 3 levels higher than her predicted grade.

Having been through the new GCSE system myself and achieving a grade 9 in English Literature I wish to share my tricks and techniques with others. I believe the new system focuses highly on formulating creative responses and alternative essay outlooks. I also purchased my own original GCSE exam papers in order to provide students with an example which I can talk students through. These exams are annotated by real GCSE examiners which I believe display to students how examiners mark and what they are looking for . I believe if a student can see how examiners mark, they can make a mental checklist when in the exam, ensuring they reach those top marks and ensuring all learning objectives are met. This way examiners positive mark and students become the top minority which favours them in achieving those top grades of 7/8/9.
I am also able to support students who are looking to achieve grades 4/5/6 as all my material is pre prepared and therefore easy to adapt to all learning styles and abilities. While the system is very rigid and structured I believe every child learns differently and therefore my lessons are very pupil centred. My lesson plans range from activities such as simple knowledge check questions to analysing and writing exam styled questions. While all my teaching material is set, I update and personalise all resources so they are tailored to each student. This ensures all areas of learning are not missed.
Furthermore, I have a year experience tutoring a GCSE Year 11 student English Literature where she achieved 3 grades higher than her predicted. Alongside this, her teachers and parents witnessed a fast improvement in both grades and confidence.
My passion lies strongly within poetry ( Both Love and Relationships and Power and Conflict) however I also have experience with texts such as Othello, Macbeth, A Christmas Carol and Lord of the Flies.
Through tutoring a year with the exam board Edexcel as well as undertaking my own English exam through AQA I have experience with both exam boards including a range of different texts and poetry. I have a strong passion for English literature and I hope the students I teach develop or strengthen a love for the subject too.
