About Emelia
I am a writer and teacher with a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing and three years of university teaching experience. I am the winner of the 2024 Virginia Tech / Poetry Society of Virginia Prize administered by the Academy of American Poets and published on Poets.org. In addition to writing, I am a multimedia artist, practiced in drawing, painting, printing, sculpture, and fiber arts. I strive to approach art and life with creativity, resilience, and tenacity--an approach I hope to bring to my students.

As a collaborative, student-centered teacher, I take my cues for how to build my lessons and approach instruction from my students. I believe our best learning is self-directed and as a result, the best teachers are guides, not drill sergeants. While lessons, activities, and discussions prime us to make discoveries, no one else can make those leaps for us.
Writing is a multi-faceted explorative tool--it helps us communicate big ideas to others and it helps us make big discoveries for ourselves. Since exchanging ideas primes us to make discoveries, and since writing is a communicative tool as much as it is an introspective one, I believe a great deal of learning occurs when we are asked to put our thoughts to paper.
As a result, dedicated writing time sits at the core of my instruction. This time can be during our time together or in between lessons, but it is critical to me that we build time for introspection and contemplation through writing. To make this time intentional, I provide prompts. To encourage contemplation, I ask my students to write in physical notebooks. In these notebooks, you're never expected to write well, but you are expected to write, hopefully with curiosity and authenticity.
As a teacher, I am preoccupied with creating an environment where my students can follow their curiosities freely, where they can experiment for fun, and where they can mess up without feeling like bad writers.
My lessons are appropriate for anyone who wants to become a better writer or reader--but most relevant for late adolescents, young adults, or adults.
