About Alina

Master the 'First Principles' of Maths, Physics, and Chemistry. Achieve A results with an Imperial College Geoscientist.*
STEM subjects are often taught as a series of formulas to be memorized. I teach them as a logical language. As a Dean’s List Geophysics student at Imperial College London and a practicing Petrophysicist, I bridge the gap between abstract equations and real-world application.
Whether it’s mastering the calculus behind A-Level Physics or understanding the thermodynamics of Chemistry, I help students develop the "Problem-Solving Intuition" required for top-tier university entry.

Imperial College Pedigree: Ranked in the top 10% of my cohort (Dean's List) and awarded the highest-scoring undergraduate thesis in my department. I teach at the academic standard of the world's best institutions.
University-Level Teaching Experience: Selected as a Teaching Assistant for 24 different university modules at Imperial, mentoring hundreds of students in advanced Maths and Physics. I know exactly where students typically stumble.
Industry Application: As a working Petrophysicist, I show students how Physics and Maths are used to solve global energy challenges, making "boring" topics come alive with professional context.
Scholarship & Entrance Specialist: Experienced in preparing students for the Eton King’s Scholarship, Westminster Challenge, and competitive STEM interviews.
Strategic Subject Mastery
Mathematics (GCSE & A-Level): Specializing in Calculus, Trigonometry, and Mechanics. I focus on derivation and "Why it works," which is the key to tackling the difficult 'Section B' questions in A-Level papers.
Physics (GCSE & A-Level): Bringing Geophysics expertise to Fields, Waves, and Nuclear Physics. I simplify complex physical systems using intuitive models and interactive digital whiteboards.
Chemistry (GCSE & A-Level): Focusing on Physical Chemistry and Organic mechanisms, ensuring students understand the underlying logic rather than just rote-learning reactions.
Professional Online Environment
I provide a high-performance digital classroom. Using a graphics tablet and shared whiteboard, we solve complex derivations together in real-time. Students receive a full PDF of our "Live Session Notes" immediately after every lesson for their revision.
Academic Track Record: 3 A*s and 2 As at A-Level (Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Geography, Russian).
Location: Online (Global) | In-person (Kensington, Chelsea, Fulham).
Availability: Weekdays 6am–9pm | Weekends 7am–9pm.
Don't just learn the formula—master the science. Message me to arrange a 15-minute introductory consultation.

My tutorials are not just "help with homework", they are structured academic coaching sessions designed to cultivate a high-performance mindset. Whether preparing for the Eton King’s Scholarship or A-Level finals, I teach students to approach STEM subjects with the precision of a professional scientist.
1. The "First Principles" Teaching Philosophy
I move away from rote memorization. Drawing on my experience as an Imperial College Teaching Assistant, I help students master "First Principles." When a student understands why a formula exists, whether in A-Level Physics fields or Chemistry thermodynamics, they can solve "unseen" exam questions that stump their peers.
2. Diagnostic & Targeted Progress
Every student’s journey begins with a Gap Analysis.
The Review: We start by clearing any conceptual "bottlenecks" from schoolwork.
The Stretch: We move into specification-specific content (AQA, Edexcel, OCR) using a "Ladder of Difficulty." We don't stop at "understanding"; we push until the student can confidently execute A/A* level multi-step problems.
The Industry Context: I frequently link abstract concepts to real-world applications in Geophysics and Petrophysics to increase engagement and long-term retention.
3. The Examiner’s Edge (Technique & Timing)
Having achieved 3 A*s and 2 As at A-Level, I know that grades are decided by "Exam Literacy."
Mark-Scheme Precision: I train students to identify "command words" and "keywords" that examiners look for in multi-mark Physics or Chemistry questions.
The Whiteboard Workshop: Using a professional graphics tablet and shared digital whiteboard, we solve complex derivations and chemical mechanisms together. This visual, interactive approach is proven to be more effective than passive listening.
Post-Session Assets: Students receive a PDF of all our live-annotated notes, derivations, and custom-picked past paper questions for their personal revision library.
4. Scholarship & University Preparation
For students aiming for the Eton King’s Scholarship, Westminster Challenge, or Oxbridge/Imperial entry, I provide specialized mentoring. This includes:
Advanced problem-solving beyond the GCSE/A-Level syllabus.
Interview preparation for STEM subjects.
Guidance on high-scoring Personal Statements and university-level research (drawing on my international conference experience).
Logistics & Levels
Mathematics: GCSE, IGCSE, A-Level (Specializing in Mechanics & Calculus).
Physics: GCSE, IGCSE, A-Level (Specializing in Fields, Particles, and Energy).
Chemistry: GCSE, IGCSE, A-Level (Physical & Inorganic Chemistry specialist).
Computer Science: GCSE Python.
Session Length: Standard sessions are 60 minutes. 90-minute "Deep Dive" sessions are recommended for A-Level Physics/Maths to allow for full past-paper walkthroughs.

Details

My standard rate starts from £60 per hour for online lessons. Rates may vary depending on the subject, level of difficulty, and scheduling requirements. I offer discounts for lessons booked in pairs or in blocks, as well as referral-based discounts for families who recommend me to others.

I am happy to mark homework or practice papers outside of lesson time, but please note that this is charged separately. The marking fee ranges from £1 to £5 depending on the length and complexity of the work. This allows me to provide detailed, constructive feedback while keeping lessons focused and efficient.

While I can occasionally travel to students' homes in the London area (particularly Kensington, Chelsea, and Fulham), I strongly prefer online tutoring due to the flexibility it offers — especially for international students and those with busy schedules.

Find out more about Alina

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

My interest in STEM was driven by a desire to understand the Earth’s systems, a journey that led to Natural Resources Investment Banking at J.P. Morgan, and later as a Petrophysicist at one of the oil majors. I began tutoring to bridge the gap between classroom theory and its high-stakes application in industry. I realised that students benefit most from seeing how Chemistry, Physics, Geography and Maths converge in the global professional landscape.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I specialise in high-impact academic milestones:

Admissions: Having taught at Imperial College, I lead 8-hour intensives for Oxbridge and Imperial interviews.
13+ & School Scholarship: Expert support for Scholarship papers (Eton, Winchester, Westminster) and ISEB CE 13+ more generally.
GCSE & A-Level: Focused coaching in Maths, Physics, Chemistry, and Geography, emphasising the 'first principles' needed for top grades, while providing additional exam technique support.
Degree Level: Professional support for Geology and Geophysics undergraduates.

I focus on subjects where I can provide a unique 'insider's perspective' from the worlds of academia and industry.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I was inspired by a professor who viewed Science as a detective story, a puzzle to be solved using data. This shaped my approach both while teaching at Imperial and in my current industry role. Whether I am tutoring a GCSE student or a University undergraduate, I emulate that style: teaching students to analyse complex information and think from first principles.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Precision, professional rigor, and adaptability. To be effective at the Imperial or 13+ Scholarship level, you must be able to simulate the pressure of an interview or scholarship exam while providing the technical scaffolding to succeed. I bring the same discipline and 'results-first' mindset to my students that I bring to my professional career.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

In my professional life as a Petrophysicist, a small error in a data model can have massive real-world consequences. I share this with my GCSE and A-Level students to show that Physics and Maths aren't just 'schoolwork', they are the tools we use to navigate and understand the Earth's resources. When students realise the practical stakes of what they are learning, their engagement and accuracy skyrocket.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

The biggest challenge for students is the 'Conceptual Leap' between academic levels. Many struggle when rote learning no longer suffices for A-Level or School/ University interviews. My speciality is helping students navigate this transition, moving toward the sophisticated, integrated thinking required at institutions like Imperial or in high-level technical careers.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I am deeply passionate about the 'Academic Transition', helping students navigate the jump from one level to the next. Whether it's a 13-year-old moving into a competitive scholarship environment, a GCSE student building the foundations for A-Level, or an undergraduate tackling Degree-level Geology, I love witnessing that specific moment when a difficult concept finally 'clicks.'

My own background in Petrophysics and industry science fuels my passion for showing students that what they learn in the classroom has a massive real-world impact. Beyond the results, my goal is to spark a genuine curiosity for how the world works, which is the ultimate key to long-term success.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I provide a rare bridge between the classroom, academia, and the professional industry. By teaching across the spectrum, from 13+ Scholarships and GCSEs to Degree-level Geology, I don't just help students pass exams; I teach them how to think like specialists.

Having taught at Imperial College London and currently working as a Petrophysicist, I bring a level of technical rigor and 'real-world' context that is rare in private tutoring. I specialise in the 'high-stakes' moments of a student's life, helping them build the analytical mindset and professional discipline required to excel at top-tier institutions and in their future careers. I am not just a tutor; I am a mentor for the next generation of STEM leaders.
