Format of tutoring session:
* Student notifies me ahead of time what topic(s) they want to cover
* Session is completely guided by student. I can go over content in the chemistry books and provide examples/problems to work through together OR we can work on what the student wants (homework, practice tests, go over problems missed on the test.

Students must bring their textbooks, paper, calculator, and anything that may be needed during the tutoring session. I encourage students to bring a laptop so that you may access helpful material from the internet (i.e. periodical table).

Snap Shots of My Chemistry Lab Instruction
As a teaching assistant (instructor of record) in the Virginia Tech Chemistry Department I taught 30 sections of General Chemistry I and II labs (24 students each) over a period of six years. Although I had to follow the syllabus from the department with pre-determined experiments, I tailored my instruction to capture students’ interest and motivate them. For example, one of the experiments from the syllabus was to have students learn how to use a GCMS, interpret chromatograms, and determine the identity and concentration of toxins. To engage my students, I framed this experiment as a NCIS/CSI case where their job was to identify the toxins & concentrations that poisoned the victim (which they really enjoyed!). They accomplished all the objectives established for this experiment, but they were able they really enjoyed the lab.
I have found that students really struggle with recording observations. A strategy that I employ during lab is that I encourage my students to use their iPhones/smartphones to capture images to include in the observation section of their lab reports. I found that if I let them use their phones to take pictures, not only do they jump at the chance to use their phones, but they seem to do better when recording observations when I tell them to describe their screen shots in their lab books.

Teaching Philosophy

Principles that Guide My Instruction
The following three principles are the most influential and reflective of my instructional practice.
Motivate Students. Students who are motivated learn more and achieve higher grades. There are five principles that I consistently apply in my classrooms that are derived from the MUSIC Model of Academic Motivation (Jones, 2009). I try to foster a sense of autonomy by providing students with choices or a perception of control over their learning, emphasize and demonstrate content usefulness, provide support to help students succeed, generate interest (at least at the situational level), and display academic and personal caring to my students. All these strategies are derived from various motivation theories and are supported by research to enhance student motivation.

Use Assignments/Assessments Tools Wisely and Effectively. Assignments need to be purposeful and not be used frivolously as mere busy work. Assessments should reflect instructional objectives. I use formative assessments to guide and revamp instruction and to remediate learning.

Instruction Should Be Informed By Both Scholarly & Action Research. Any instructional strategies employed in my classrooms are backed by evidence. I question what strategies have been proven to be effective. As a teaching professional, I keep current with literature on instructional strategies. Just as every student is different, every class is different. Student understanding and levels of achievement may vary between different course sections and from semester to semester. I believe it is important to use action research in the classroom to help diagnose the problems or effectiveness of my instruction. I try to keep an open mind—I can learn from my students and improve instructional strategies.
