About Spencer
I've been playing the piano for 10 years and started teaching myself through YouTube before finding a teacher after three years of learning as much as possible through the internet. From there, I started exploring more complex music theory and piano content. I began learning jazz in my freshman year of high school and hosted jazz jam sessions around my hometown, Hong Kong.
I auditioned for NYU's Jazz Studies program and got accepted. I now study at NYU’s renowned Jazz program, and I’m excited to share what I’ve learned. I keep lessons fun, low-pressure, and engaging, but also structured enough to help you make real progress. I provide a formal practice routine designed to guide your technical and musical development by mapping out clear milestones. I love talking about music and encourage students to ask questions and explore their creativity.

I base my lessons around the current interests of the student, starting lessons off with an exchange of musical influences, interests, and goals. From there, I create a lesson plan that is engaging and fun while also tailoring the content to the student's musical goals. As an initially self-taught pianist with 10 years of playing experience, I find it extremely important to fuel creativity in young musicians and let them discover what makes them passionate about the instrument. I'm capable of teaching piano students from the beginning level to more advanced concepts. I also teach jazz music theory and high-level harmonic, rhythmic, melodic, and compositional concepts.

Perfect! I've been taking weekly piano lessons with Spencer at my apartment, and I highly recommend him as a tutor. I'm a beginner who learned piano many years ago and recently decided to pick it up again. Spencer has been incredibly helpful in guiding me through the relearning process. He’s patient, professional, and focused on building a solid foundation — we've been working on technique and scales. I look forward to continuing my lessons and making progress with his support!
