About Karine
My name is Karine. I come from Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I am a certified French teacher with over 20 years experience: 12 years in the classroom, 8 years as a private tutor and 3 years as a tutor online. I love teaching students French as a second language, as well as helping struggling learners with reading, writing and grammar. I was born in France and we moved to Canada when I was 5 years old so French is my native language. In Calgary, I continued learning French at French immersion schools, went to the University of Calgary; got an Education degree, with a minor in French. After university, I went traveling. I visited Budapest and landed my first teaching job as a kindergarten teacher at a private international school. I realized then that this was the perfect career for me. I was learning just as much from the students as they were from me and I loved it! When I returned to Canada, I got a job with the Calgary Board of Education teaching first grade at my old elementary school. It was in those ten years that I developed my expertise in teaching French literacy skills. This has now become my passion: helping struggling readers and writers. Once I started my family, I wanted to stay home with my two children. Missing teaching inspired me to start my own tutoring practice. I tutored for over eight years in my home; helping students in all elementary levels with French reading/writing, grammar, math and homework. During this time, I realized that what I loved about private tutoring was that I could really help each student succeed with their learning and how they learn. It was wonderful to see how they progressed and became confident learners. Since Covid, I have been tutoring online. I felt hesitant at first with this as I was unsure about how the building of connection with my students would go but I have found that it works very well. It is just as easy to create a rapport with students online, while they are in the comfort of their own homes. With technology too nowadays, we can screen share and do everything we need to learn together online. My mission as a teacher and tutor is to create confident, resourceful and persistent learners that enjoy learning a new language.

I love teaching students French as a second language, as well as helping struggling learners with reading, writing, grammar and their homework. I teach all levels but my specialty is early French literacy (kindergarten to grade 4). Teaching French speaking, reading and writing to beginners. I have created a reading and writing program that is geared specifically in helping struggling learners and beginner readers. It uses the pillars of the science of reading method that focuses on oral language, phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. I have found it is truly the best way for children to learn to read as they have a solid foundation from the start. This is very useful for all students as many that struggle later do not have this base foundation of reading and writing. As a tutor, it is very important to me to create a connection with each student and to make learning fun. I want the student to feel comfortable, empowered and confident in their learning. For the younger students; I play games, sing and practice movements to learn vocabulary. A typical lesson for a student in grade one would be first focusing on some vocabulary and speaking (through games, songs and movement), then working with phonics and the putting sounds together, moving to words and how to break the words up in syllables (decoding) and finally writing some simple words (encoding) like a 'spelling test' but not a memorized one. Students need to show the concepts they learned in the reading by transferring it to writing.

Having my kids learning with Karine was an excellent experience because they were always happy to see her, they would laugh and feel comfortable with her, and their learning progressed considerably. Karine was always professional, flexible and easy going. While Karin was always prepared with engaging lessons and learning strategies, she was also willing to respond to her learner's unique learning needs. We felt lucky for the opportunity to learn with her and I highly recommend Karine as an educator.
When my son started working one on one with Karine, he was 6 years old, halfway through grade 1 in French Immersion. He had limited phonemic awareness and was lagging in class. He got very little support from school, and active discouragement from his teacher in terms of continuing in French. Working with Karine has been a blessing- she was fantastic at recognizing my son's missing foundational concepts, and worked consistently and predictably in building his sound awareness. She has a wonderful, encouraging manner and her approach to teaching French makes a lot of intuitive sense. My son can now read simple texts, and his confidence in class has soared. It has been a lonely road as a parent trying to support a young learner whose primary education was totally disrupted by the pandemic. Karine's experience as a parent, teacher and tutor has also instilled in me personally the confidence that my son will be just fine. I am really grateful to have found Karine for my son!
We had Karine for two years to tutor my kids in French. She is a dedicated, passionate, and fun teacher. My two kids are at different levels in French, but Karine managed to teach both of them simultaneously and kept them engaged during the class. We were in Montreal for the past summer and I was delighted about my kids' French level. Kudo to Karine.
