About Siyanda

Welcome! Let's Make Chemistry Easier to Understand.

I am Dr Siyanda Mthembu, a Chemistry Lecturer with a passion for teaching, learning, and helping students achieve their academic goals.

I hold a PhD in Chemistry. My academic and teaching experience includes undergraduate and postgraduate Chemistry, with particular expertise in Organic Chemistry. As both an educator and a researcher, I bring a strong scientific foundation and a practical, problem-solving approach to every lesson.

My approach to teaching is built on understanding, patience, and individual growth. I know that Chemistry can sometimes seem complicated, especially when students encounter unfamiliar concepts, chemical equations, calculations, or reaction mechanisms. My goal is to make these topics easier to understand by breaking them down into manageable steps, explaining the reasoning behind each concept, and connecting theory to practical applications.

I know that every student learns differently. That is why I tailor my lessons to your learning needs, current level of understanding, and academic goals. Whether you need help strengthening your foundations, preparing for an examination, improving your marks, or tackling challenging university-level Chemistry, I will guide you through the material in a structured and supportive learning environment.

During our lessons, you can expect clear explanations, worked examples, guided problem-solving, and opportunities to practise independently. I encourage questions and know that making mistakes is a valuable part of learning. Rather than simply memorising information, you will develop the conceptual understanding and analytical skills needed to approach Chemistry problems with greater confidence.

As a university lecturer, I understand the importance of academic standards, effective assessment preparation, and independent thinking. I bring these principles into my tutoring to help students build skills that extend beyond their immediate assessments.

I offer Chemistry tutoring in English to high school learners studying Chemistry or Physical Sciences, as well as university students seeking support with introductory and advanced Chemistry modules.

My commitment to you is simple: to provide professional, personalised, and engaging lessons that help you understand Chemistry, recognise your potential, and work towards your academic goals. I want you to leave each lesson feeling more confident, better prepared, and equipped to tackle the next challenge.

If Chemistry has been difficult for you, do not be discouraged. With the right guidance, consistent practice, and a willingness to learn, progress is possible. I look forward to helping you develop your understanding of Chemistry and achieve your best.

My Approach to Private Chemistry Tutoring

I am an Organic Chemistry Lecturer holding a PhD in Chemistry. I am experienced teaching undergraduate and postgraduate students. I am passionate about helping learners develop a deeper understanding of Chemistry, improve their academic performance, and build confidence in their abilities.

My teaching methodology

My tutoring approach is student-centred, interactive, and tailored to each student's individual learning needs. I believe that Chemistry becomes much easier when students understand the fundamental principles behind concepts rather than simply memorising definitions, equations, and reaction mechanisms. I break down complex topics into manageable steps, use practical examples to illustrate abstract concepts, and guide students through problems until they can solve them independently.

What makes me unique as a tutor is the combination of my advanced academic qualifications, university-level teaching experience, and research background in Organic Chemistry. I understand the challenges students face when learning Chemistry, particularly when they need to connect theoretical knowledge with calculations, chemical reactions, mechanisms, and experimental applications. I create a supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and learning at their own pace.

Subjects and types of lessons

I offer personalised Chemistry tutoring, including:

First year General Chemistry.
Examination preparation: Revision of key concepts, practice questions, problem-solving techniques, and preparation for tests and examinations.
University-level Chemistry support: Assistance with understanding difficult lecture material, consolidating foundational knowledge, and developing the analytical and problem-solving skills required for tertiary studies.

Lessons are adapted to the student's syllabus, current level of understanding, academic goals, and upcoming assessments.

What to expect from a typical lesson

Every lesson begins by identifying the topic to be covered and assessing the student's understanding of the relevant concepts. I then explain the material step by step, using examples, diagrams, equations, reaction schemes, and worked problems where appropriate. Students are encouraged to participate actively, ask questions, and explain their reasoning.

We progressively move from fundamental principles to more challenging applications. I also use practice questions to identify knowledge gaps and strengthen problem-solving skills. Lessons conclude with a review of the key learning points and recommendations for further practice.

My goal is not simply to help students pass an examination, but to equip them with the knowledge, confidence, and independent learning skills they need to succeed beyond the classroom.

Who are my lessons for?

My lessons are suitable for high school learners studying Chemistry or Physical Sciences, university students undertaking introductory or advanced Chemistry modules, and students who need additional support with challenging concepts. I also welcome students preparing for supplementary examinations, aiming to improve their marks, or seeking to strengthen their Chemistry foundations before progressing to more advanced courses.

Whether you are struggling with the basics, preparing for an important examination, or looking to deepen your understanding of advanced Chemistry, I will work with you to develop a personalised learning approach that supports your goals.

Language of instruction

I offer tutoring in English, with explanations adapted to suit the student's level of understanding. My aim is to communicate complex scientific concepts clearly, patiently, and effectively.

My commitment to your success

I believe every student can improve with the right guidance, consistent practice, and a teaching approach that meets their individual needs. Through personalised attention, clear explanations, and structured problem-solving, I aim to make Chemistry more accessible, engaging, and rewarding.
