About Hillary
My own musical journey began as a child - I had the opportunity to perform in school shows and local choirs. I began formal training in piano and voice, following the Royal Conservatory of Music curriculum, as a preteen and it quickly became my deepest passion. I landed my first professional gig as a musician in highschool and became the Music Director at Fingal United Church. I had the wonderful opportunity to perform the piano each week, sight-read, improvise, and offer vocal solos for special occasions. This job simultaneously introduced me to the world of teaching and mentorship. As a young teen, I had the responsibility to teach the church choir the anthems and hymns that they performed each week at the church services. Since then, my life has continued to share focus between performance and teaching - each deeply informing the other.
I went on to study music at Western University, earning an Honours Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance and achieved the Western University Gold Medal for the Music Faculty upon graduation. I also earned my Masters in Voice Literature and Performance at Western. Since my degrees I have continuously dedicated myself to improving my craft of performance and teaching, whether reading pedagogy and anatomy books, or studying with the musical minds of our day including: Dame Sarah Connolly, Catherine Robbin, Craig Rutenberg, James Westman, and Joseph Middleton, just to name a few. My performance work is centred around classical music, but I also perform musical theatre and popular music too. I’ve had the immense pleasure to work for a number of Canadian organisations, including Vancouver Opera, the Vancouver Bach Choir, Victoria Philharmonic Choir, Tapestry Opera, Magisterra Soloists, the Kingston Symphony Orchestra, Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, the Elmer Isler Singers, Les jeunes ambassadeurs lyriques, Highlands Opera, Brott Opera, The Toronto Summer Music Festival, and Toronto City Opera.

Music-making can be a deeply personal experience and an expression of the true self. Likewise, learning how to play or sing with ease and skill is a journey unique to the individual; No two individuals are the same and no two paths to musical skill and freedom are the same either. I strive to reach each student, by tailoring my language, energy, and methods to the learning style, goals, and personality of the student. My main objective is to provide my individuals with the tools and confidence to express their authentic musical voice and artistic inclinations, uninhibited by psychological or physical restraints.
To provide the best learning experience, my programming focuses on playful exploration and providing my students with a solid technical foundation substantiated in scientific, anatomical, and acoustical facts. I endeavour to develop learning plans that are specific to students’ personal goals, but to also provide them with a well-rounded musical education, so that they are prepared to be independent artists and problem-solvers.
