About Tasnim

I have always enjoyed teaching a wide variety of students both at GCSE and A Levels as well as adult learners. Currently I am working with the Foreign Office, teaching diplomats and preparing them for the Foreign Office Diplomatic Service Language Allowance examination. I thoroughly enjoy this wide spectrum of teaching as it enables me to cover all aspects of language training; from grammar and syntax to literature as well as culture.

Since September 2000, I have worked as a language teacher in a secondary school teaching GCSE and A Level classes. I started my teaching career at Mayfield secondary school as an unqualified instructor teaching part-time (0.4) Urdu lessons. Gradually, I incorporated teaching of more subjects both at GCSE and A Levels. In June 2005, I decided to go for QTS and completed the training year in March 2006. From September 06 I was on my NQT training which I completed towards the end of the academic year. During my training I have also been working as co-tutor for GCSE and A Level tutor groups.

I am fluent in Urdu, Persian (Farsi) and Punjabi. For my master’s program I chose Persian (Farsi) out of my own inclination for this language. Since Persian is one of the main languages Urdu is derived from, I have found the knowledge of this language extremely useful in teaching Urdu at various levels.

When I joined MFL department the methods employed to teach Urdu were in an archaic form particularly vis-à-vis other Modern Foreign Languages. I revised and introduced new methods and have constantly searched for materials that students find more engaging and useful in the process of learning a language. I frequently attend seminars and languages fairs such as the one held at Olympia last November. Here I am able to obtain interactive CD and DVD ROMs, which are now installed in the main ICT department for my students. While conducting research work for my M.Phil Program in Pakistan last year, I managed to pick up Urdu keyboards and various language learning programs which have enabled me to produce regular testing material and also give my students another means to learn. Apart form this I have also developed transparencies to use in my language lessons, thus making the mechanics of teaching more diverse. Recently, I have developed alphabet joining letter charts for the beginners in my subject. These are all unique to my course as none of these are available in the market. My first textbook consisting of 101 lessons on Urdu language and grammar for non-native speakers written in English and Romanized Urdu is already in market. Currently, I am working on compiling a textbook for GCSE Urdu Higher and Foundation Levels.

I introduced Persian (Farsi) GCSE and A Levels into the school curriculum and first years we entered 5 students for GCSE and 2 for A Level Persian. In the absence of prescribed books and other teaching material, I visited the Iranian Cultural Centre in Lahore, Pakistan and selected what I felt would be appropriate teaching aids. This enabled me to develop course material for GCSE Persian at Foundation/Higher and AS/A2 Levels. Within a year the intake for Persian as well as Urdu increased significantly as a direct result of previous years’ success and both GCSE/A level Urdu and Persian results have been one of the best in whole school.

I was selected as a lecturer by the Punjab Public Service Commission (Education Department) Pakistan in 1977 where I worked as Head of Persian Department for several years. I graduated in English, Persian and Arabic and chose Persian for Master’s programme as Persian is the mother language to all indigenous languages spoken in the Indus region i.e.Urdu, Punjabi, Saraiki, Sindhi etc. Thus, the knowledge of Persian is essential in order to learn Urdu, Punjabi or any indigenous language of the Indus valley that is Pakistan today. Personally, I believe proficiency in language is an exceptional skill and one that is becoming rare these days.
