About Emily
I started teaching special education in 2010 and over the years became the math specialist before becoming highly-qualified in secondary mathematics and switching content areas. I have taught math in elementary, middle, and high school grades in both Arizona and Washington states. I got my Master of Education in Educational Technology, which enhanced my ability to design and deliver instruction in online contexts. I also got my PhD in Math Education where I taught math methods courses for undergraduate students training to become teachers. Currently, I tutor online and support math teachers in schools around Scottsdale, Arizona and Seattle, Washington adapt their instruction to be more student-centered, equitable, and inclusive. I love teaching and findings new ways to support all learners succeed in math.

I use multiple methods to teach based on the student's educational needs and interests. I start by getting to know the student's prior understanding on the topic and areas of strength and struggle, before diving into the content. I can provide more direct instructional support and scaffold out the steps and processes for students who prefer a more structured, linear approach to learning, or provide a more adaptive and dynamic approach by using complex tasks and helping the student creatively problem-solve and explore their ideas. I am skilled at adapting my instruction based on student needs and finding ways to help students connect to the mathematical topics to deepen their understanding. Everyone can learn and succeed at math, and I pride myself on using a strength-based approach to help build confidence and agency.
