Hugo is a respected member of our tutor community. He is highly recommended for his commitment and the quality of his lessons. An excellent choice to progress with confidence.
About Hugo
I did my PhD in Philosophy at King's College London, specialising in philosophy of language and mind. Before that I did an MPhil (i.e. a masters) at Cambridge and a BA at Southampton (both also in Philosophy); at Southampton I won awards for the highest overall marks in my cohort and highest marked dissertation. I have also spent time visiting UT Austin and the university of Lund, both funded by the KCL department.
EXPERIENCE
During my time at King's I have taught undergraduate seminars and occasional lectures in: Logic, Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Mind, Formal methods in philosophy, Epistemology, Metaphysics.
TESTIMONIALS
Here are some things students have said about me:
"The most positive aspect was my experience in seminars. Some recognition needs to be given to Hugo Heagren. He has been by far the best teacher I have had to date at King's. He has made the work understandable but also academically challenging through always providing detailed, specific and tailored feedback."
(Feedback to module lead for introductory metaphysics)
"Hugo has been an amazing teacher. Always prioritising his students and going above and beyond during his seminars. He has provided me with tailored advice to improve my essay skills and philosophy knowledge and as someone who has never studied philosophy before, this is something I much appreciate." (Department-wide GTA award nomination)
"Hugo is a fantastic seminar leader. He is incredibly well organised and highly knowledgeable on the topics he teaches. Additionally, he is always open if you require extra help. You can really tell he is highly committed to delivering great classes." (University-wide teaching award nomination)

My lessons are usually very interactive, like Oxbridge-style tutorials/supervisions. We will decide in advance on which topics to cover and then talk through an essay, a plan, or series of questions. I can also teach content from scratch.
SERVICES FOR DEGREE-LEVEL STUDENTS
- Essay marking and in-depth feedback on how to improve. I provide feedback and guidance on both the content of essays and writing style, to help you achieve full marks.
- Research guidance: I can talk over potential dissertation topics and help you decide on a direction, and build a reading list of sources.
- Academic guidance: I have studied at
- Logic tuition: lots of students find logic especially difficult. I teach logic interactively, with lots of simple questions, building up from very basic principles to high level exam questions. (see below for more information).

LOGIC
Among other areas, I teach logic. Learning and teaching logic is quite different from the rest of the philosophy, as logic is a formal topic a bit like maths. I have taught hundreds of students logic, mostly from Halbach's book "The Logic Manual". If you're having trouble with any part of the logic course, I'll be well equipped to help. We can go through past papers and questions, do practice drills about specific rules, and build up from simple foundations to whatever level you need.
One of my logic students wrote about me:
"Hugo is excellent: Friendly, engaging, explains patiently and simply, makes Logic a whole lot more approachable and tolerable (I initially thought I'd HATE it). My favourite seminar leader. Probably wouldn't attend half the seminars I do if he weren't here. "
Recommendations

My experience with Hugo’s teaching extends back to my philosophy seminars at King’s College London. Given its prestige you would expect those most passionate about teaching and the subject, and Hugo certainly reflected that.
Coming into seminars as an Undergraduate, I think it’s common for students to be anxious about engaging with discussion, though Hugo’s ease and rapport with the class immediately negated those feelings.
More importantly, however, Hugo’s excitement and passion for the subject really showed, which I think is incredibly important in generating your own excitement for learning and engaging with your chosen degree.
Even outside of class, in office hours, I found Hugo to be attentive, taking the extra step that some wouldn’t to really ensure you understand the content explored in class.
I would recommend Hugo’s teaching to anyone studying Philosophy!Hugo was my tutor for advanced philosophy of mind module at KCL. I cannot recomment Hugo highly enough. He was extremely helpful, dedicated and went above and beyond for his students. He would host weekly office hours and would give me tailored support, to which I achieved a first in his module. Honestly, an amazing teacher.
I have had the pleasure of attending Hugo’s Philosophy of Language seminars this year. He has been the most pedagogical, attentive and adaptable tutor I have ever encountered. I then audited another of his subjects, largely because I trusted that his teaching would make the work required less burdensome, more comprehensible. He has always passionately engaged with topics we brought up, or additional questions, and even followed up on them afterwards: there was a consistent queue in his office hours. The classes’ climate was respectful and kind, reflecting how he acted as a tutor. I can only highly recommend Hugo in any teaching position.
Hugo was a tutor during my undergraduate degree, he was one of the most genuinely knowledgeable people I met during my time at university. He was exceptionally helpful in his teaching and made difficult concepts easier to grasp. I could not recommend him more.
Hugo was my seminar leader for Logic, and the man has an ungodly amount of patience—even for the academically dubious. No matter the issue, he’d a way to make it click, and his tangents into adjacent topics were always fun.
