About Alec
I am currently a graduate student at the University of Arizona, pursuing a Ph.D. in Philosophy and a JD law degree. My biggest passion, ever since I was about 5 years old, is reading and writing. I double-majored in English and Philosophy as an undergrad student at Franklin and Marshall College, where I worked as a tutor in the Writing Center for 2 years. I helped students on their thesis papers, focusing on all stages of the writing process: brainstorming, creating a thesis, writing an introductory paragraph, structuring the body of the paper, writing topic sentences, using quotations from source material, writing a conclusion, editing for grammar and typos, and creating a bibliography/works cited page. In my spare time, I love to read fiction, play tennis, and watch movies!

Through my time as a writing tutor in high school and college, as well as my time as a current Graduate Teaching Assistant, the most important thing I have learned about tutoring and teaching is that everyone--everyone!--has great ideas. My approach as a tutor and teacher is, therefore, to focus closely on my students' ideas and theses rather than any I might have, taking their strong suits as jumping-off points for whatever project they are working on.
Now I know that, for many students, coming up with ideas for papers is one of the most difficult parts. I am happy to help! I love helping students come up with a thesis, but never by giving them any ideas. Instead, I help them brainstorm, discovering ideas that they might not have known they already had.
All stages of the writing process are important, and I provide guidance across the board, from the brainstorming stage to crafting a clear thesis statement to editing a rough draft.
After each session, I will write up a summary of what we did, covering all of the major points--this will provide the student with something to look back at as he/she continues working toward his/her goal.
