About Gabe
Gabe Barbieri started his musical studies when he was 3 years old, having his mother as first teacher. Later, he pursued a BS in Music Education at the Baptist College in Rio de Janeiro, where he developed his studies focusing on technical training aspect of the piano teaching. Simultaneously, he pursued a BM in Piano Performance at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, in the studio of Dr Midori Maeshiro and Dr Tamara Ujakova; and voice minor with Dr Lenine Santos. After graduating, he took private lessons with the Israeli pianist Mordehay Simoni.
Gabe is internationally active in the piano scene, often teaching and playing in courses, festivals and recitals. Recently, he won a prize in the 1st piano competition in Londrina, Brazil. When it comes to teaching experience, for the past 8 years, Gabe has been a faculty member of the School for Musicians of Jardim Botanico in Rio de Janeiro, where he taught a wide range of students, from early ages to elders and several of them are now pursuing their degrees in Music. Gabe also is an avid collaborative pianist, having played with several musicians from all over the globe.
As for learning and professional development, the 3-part Music Education program designed by Dr Shelly Moorman-Stahlman at the Lebanon Valley College, played a decisive role. At the LVC he could be trained for teaching piano both individual and group classes, being an intern assisting the class piano program and the piano department itself.
Gabe has been mentored by Nathan Carterette, an international concert pianist. after being accepted for Master programs in piano performance, piano pedagogy and collaborative piano in 5 universities, both in the US and Europe, he decided to continue his musical studies at Butler University, working with Dr. Kate Boyd.
Currently, Gabe keeps his private studio in Indianapolis and Zionsville, accepting piano students and coaching vocalists.

Considering the importance of engaging the student in the learning process, the teaching approach needs depart from where the student is. Which means that each student has a singular background and personality. Then my job is to read those personal information and adapt the musical and instrumental fundaments to the students reality and wishes.
Beginners: I have not found a perfect method that works for everybody and I don`t believe I will, although I use basically 5 different methods, picking up from them pieces and exercises that fits well to the student`s needs.
Intermediates and Advanced: As the student grows musical and technically, the teaching/learning process dwell in the chosen repertoire combined with some exercises. All the pieces must be chosen aiming the student`s growth. By repertorie I mean classical pieces and/or popular songs.
As a general music educator, not just a piano teacher, I personally enforce the importance of the musical reading, technical growth, musical comprehention and accurate ears. This combo will make you able to put all the notes and chords together to make it really become music.

Hello, all. My name is Antonia and I'm 23 years old. I've been Gabe's student for about five years on and off. I remember the first time I went on stage to perform a song on the piano: I was nervous, I could feel my heart beating in my hands and I was sure I'd wreck it. I looked to the side of the stage and there he was. He smiled and mouthed "you've got this" to me. I'm still not sure I didn't kill the song, but having him there gave me the confidence I needed to play. I got through to end of the set and he hugged me tight, told me I did great and that he was proud of me. Our next class together he went point by point with me on everything I'd done wrong. This is the kind of teacher he is. Gabriel is supportive and caring. He is dedicated and sweet without ever losing touch of his need for perfection. Nothing is ever enough for him which is how he got me to believe I can always do more, I can learn more and I could try for more. Because he knows I can, so he pushes. And, once I get there, we celebrate together and then it's on to something new. He's there to help. He is always there. Gabriel's got a million techniques for just about anything one might need in this musical endeavor and he always finds a way to make it happen for his students. He is careful and attentive. He is funny and nice. The day he told me he was moving to the U.S. I went home scared thinking I'd lost my favorite teacher and one of my closest friends. I cried. I also knew that could not be it for us and it wasn't: now we have online classes. I still get to see him every week. We are currently working on the toughest song I've chosen and yesterday was the first day I played it that it sounded like a song. I looked to my computer screen at him and, though he couldn't hug me, he smiled and said he was proud of me. And, as always, we were onto something new.
What I mean to say here is that there could be no better choice. Gabe is the one. Trust me.Gabe was always a very kind and available teacher. He’s patience is what drove our classes to success, specially when it comes to understanding my personal limitations and help me improve my stronger skills. I would definitely recommend his methods to anyone who’s interested either in learning music from the very beginning, either in becoming a solid professional pianist.
