About Sara Mae
I have taught poetry as a band coach at Girls Rock Camp Boston, as a teaching artist in the backs of coffee shops and bars, as an instructor in an online series I conceptualized about the implications of hope during a pandemic, as a museum educator at MASS MoCA, through analogue student matinee programming for Baltimore Center Stage, and as a guest instructor at an alternative high school in Idaho. I came to my understanding of poetry through New England slam venues and studying creative writing at Emerson College: straddling academia and grassroots learning. As Executive Director of FEMS, one of my responsibilities was facilitating open community organizing meetings, to which anyone could come, and finding a way to celebrate the offerings of each community member.

Relationship building is core to facilitation, and one aspect of integrating this into education is culturally responsive programming: teaching things that are relevant to the students. The right teacher is good at getting a class to love what she loves by meeting people where they are at. I believe that being a poet, and being a good teacher, is finding the entry points that allow us to share with people the kind of wonder that moves us. It is making visible the invisible spirit at work in everything.
