About Kurtis
Hey! My name is Kurtis Scotland and I have been playing the saxophone for 11 years, having achieved my Grade 8 Jazz Saxophone with Trinity Laban Conservatoire, grade 5 ABRSM Theory and currently a 3rd year student at Leeds Conservatoire on BA(Hons) Music (Jazz). I am open to teaching children and adults alike. I am an active musician in Leeds, doing function band projects with multiple pop artists (including Sam Cotton and Shania Sabrina), headlining jazz jams and participating in some major projects such as the "Contemporary Jazz Orchestra" from March 2024 to present, the "Leeds Improvisers Orchestra" from September 2025 and the Leeds Conservatoire "Sounds Like This" project in 2023. I am personally taught under Jamiroquai's Jim Corry and jazz practitioners Edgar Jones and Matt Anderson, and played gigs with interesting figures like Jay Rayner, Johnny Enright from Grupo X, composer and guitarist Steve Banks, free jazz practitioner James Mainwaring, Brazilian saxophonist Gustavo Andrade and many more. I have formed musical groups myself, such as various jazz ensembles for my original music, 'Bubbalicious' (Nottingham 2021-22), 'Deff60' (Leeds 2023- present), 'Bardic Inspiration' (2025- present). I also have experience in youth jazz groups such as Nottingham Youth Jazz Orchestra, who I played with for a year to fully develop my playing and sight-reading (which I recommend for all players!)

I like to prioritise motivation and inspiration when it comes to teaching. In order to get the most out of learning an instrument, you must find the joy in it and the motivation to be as good as some of the sax gods out there. As a teacher, I am happy to lead the session down a fun route, or for you to lead the session by bringing in pieces or ideas you have explored that we could use the lesson time learning. I can also build up your confidence with music theory, sight-reading, improvisation and extended technique. Whether you want to rock out, jazz out or play some beautiful classical repertoire; I have personal and ongoing experience in the jazz, classical, rock, neo-soul, hip hop and pop scenes and will help you refine these genres on your instrument. I have plenty of experience working with and teaching children, so if you happen to be a parent looking for a healthy pastime for your child, I am happy to provide fun and entertaining music lessons. I can also coach you through the very beginnings of learning the saxophone all the way to your grade 8 on any exam board. I have plenty of fresh experience working through the exams myself and studying exam repertoire and exercises extensively. I know what the examiners are looking for to give you a good grade, as well as the features of the exams, why they are useful and how to get the most out of them for your personal playing.
