About Jacob
Hello! I have found that I have a strong interest with working with people throughout my life, social life, and jobs, and enjoy getting to know the aspects of people that makes them unique. I can't wait to learn more about my students, and I really enjoy the challenge of shaping my lessons and methods around each student. My students also get a say! I will be constantly getting insight into how the student prefers to learn, or if they don't know their preferred way to learn, help them find it! I think that it's really important that you find a way that works for you, as the times that I have struggled in school are times when I just felt discouraged about learning and the way that the teacher teaches.

I don't believe that it should be entirely on the student to understand something immediately, and as teachers we should employ more patience, understanding, and responsibility. For example, think how easily we speak our native language, but often forget how much time and pain went into learning and employing it fluently.
My style is something that I have evolved over the course of my academic career and currently use in college, and is something that is not complicated or hard to grasp believe it or not. I first work to "soften" the concepts of information (in other words to break the concepts down into their most simple and primal forms) and encourage the students to make connections rather than view them as individual lessons as they are too often presented as at school. For the teacher it doesn't matter as they already understand the information, but for the student this connection rather than measured intake is of the upmost important. There is, of course, a challenge to this that is intrinsically different from memorization, but ends up helping you learn, and is less time-consuming and painful in the end.
You can do this in different ways, and I will be working hard to make sure that the way we do it fits the student's unique learning style. I personally like to create two different books: one, is the notes I take in the lesson live, and that I hope eventually to give up entirely for the 'soft' book I will eventually be able to fill in with my brain. The other, the softened, is where I go back in later and break the lesson down into its connections and bland concepts. When I am teaching, I encourage the student to do one part where they make connections with the bland concepts themselves without help from the lesson book, and another part where they compare their unique connections with the lesson book, and make connections with the reality of the lesson. I encourage the student to be creative with these questions, and emphasize that there really are no wrong connections to make. I also encourage some sort of practice with that lesson at the end, whether that be practice sheets given by the teacher for math, or something that requires a bit more creativity if the student feels up for it.
This may seem easy in implementation, but one of the challenges arises when you try to apply this method universally to all areas, and the more different a subject area is, often times the more difficult this is. However, I have a lot of experience with utilizing this method, and as I have mentioned before, I have fine-tuned it extensively.
I will do my best to "mirror" with their understanding, which is not to say that I will lead them to believe I don't understand the concept, but is to say I will meet them where they are at rather than expect them to meet me where I am at, and by doing this create a more comfortable and conducive learning environment. I know that in my experience I easily get intimidated and feel immense pressure when a teacher is desperately and aggressively trying to get me to understand something that they understand so easily.

I prefer to use Zelle for online and in-person payment, but cash is also fine for in-person tutoring.
I may on occasion suggest different materials, but these are just suggestions and not required as a part of my job.
