About Lana
I have experience teaching Life Science to High school learners - Grades 10 to 12. I have two years experience teaching Grade 12 Life Sciences to both English and Afrikaans learners.
I taught abroad (UAE) for two years, teaching Biology to ESL (English Second Language) learners in Grades 10 and 11.
I also have 3 years of field experience, working in the Forensic Science Laboratory for the South African Police Service (SAPS). This exposure to industry has equipped me with valuable knowledge as to what skills are required in order to flourish in a scientific environment.

I am a passionate, creative and enthusiastic teacher. I enjoy a hands-on learning approach, whereby students are in control of their own learning experience. I enjoy incorporating practical activities as I believe we learn better by doing rather than by seeing or listening. I prefer to have a facilitator role, this allows the student to be the centre of the teaching and learning process.
My lessons start with a brief introduction to the topic - this may be in the form of a short video, a mind-map, a game, or a brainstorm. The body of the lesson focuses on self-learning and self-discovery. I always incorporate a vocabulary list into the lesson, especially if a topic/chapter is new. Students will do their own research/reading/exploring during the body of the lesson. My role is to facilitate, provide clarity, guide and answer any questions. I enjoy doing group activities, mostly mixed-levelled groups.
A lesson will always end with an exit activity to assess student understanding and to assess whether learning took place. This can be in the form of an exit-card, a set of questions, a brief discussion or a presentation by the group and/or individuals.
Students will always have reading to do in preparation for the next lesson.
