About Roxy
I am a writer who loves English! I want to share my passion for communicating and pass along my love for the subject by helping students. My own skills in English were developed by having excellent teachers on my journey, who chose to nurture and make curriculums engaging to their pupils. I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to learn in an environment where they can make mistakes, lean into their strengths and grow in confidence.
Tutoring is great because it allows the pupil to completely focus on their own skills and journey, as opposed to being swallowed up in a class environment.
Personally, I feel that tutoring will inadvertently help me in developing my own writing practice, as I'll be going back to foundational skills. As I am currently freelancing, (therefore more flexible,) tutoring is also a good fit with my time commitments.

My lessons might look like:
- reading comprehension, with a focus on word games
- lessons in reading texts, looking at symbolism through passages
- focus on set texts that the student is working on
- reading and assessing previous student work, then drilling helpful aids
- conversation practice
- practice on answering assessed questions to suit current guidelines
- one to one support with grammar, sentence structure, vocabulary, other specific skills
- creative writing tutoring
My students might be:
- getting ready to take their GCSEs or A levels in English (lit or lang)
- second-language speakers looking to develop their skills
- younger readers developing their reading comprehension
- undergraduate students struggling with writing essays
- secondary-school aged pupils who need some extra support outside lessons
I'm a patient and well-prepared tutor who uses games, feedback and a highly personalised approach where needed. I believe learning should be engaging in the right way for each unique person... the challenge can become fun!
I have experience of working in theatre and festivals, am a safeguarding officer for a local sports club and have worked with graduate interns in previous jobs, so am able to engage with a range of ages.
I will provide lessons for either 30 mins, 1 hr or 90 mins, depending on the requirements of the student. I teach both English Literature and Language.
As a recent graduate, I am proud to have achieved a First at the Open University, an environment which needs a high level of self-motivation. I will bring this to each lesson, creating lesson plans to suit the needs of my students.
