About Daniel
I'm a PhD Religious Studies graduate from McGill University, the top-ranked university in Canada, and have a Master's Degree in Classics from Dalhousie University. I am a published author and editor of academic journals, and a specialist in Ancient Greek philosophy, theology, and language. I am in the process of publishing a monograph on the great Byzantine philosopher-theologian Maximus Confessor. I have a friendly, patient, easy going personality and enjoy nothing more than imparting my love of ancient Greek philosophy and Byzantine Orthodox theology to students.

This course is for beginner/intermediate students interested in learning about Eastern Orthodox Christianity. I offer a combination of brief lectures and in-class close reading and discussion of ancient texts. Class slated to begin Jan. 2024. Below is a brief synopsis.
What is the Eastern Orthodox Church’s understanding of God and Christ? Creation and salvation? What is the role of the human as priest of creation? In what sense is the theology of the Orthodox Church “mystical”? Why is it sometimes referred to as a “cosmic liturgy”? This course seeks to answer these questions through a close reading of the Fathers (and Mothers) of the Church ranging from the 4th to the 14th centuries. Additional readings will be drawn from contemporary Orthodox theologians. Our exploration begins, in proper Orthodox fashion, with the unknowability of God. It is only after we have freed ourselves from our many preconceptions that we can begin to think about God, creation, and the meaning of salvation/deification (theosis). The subsequent lectures unfold in a (theo)logical order beginning with God as Trinity, followed by creation, and then anthropology and the Fall. These topics provide the basis for a consideration of Christ, the Redeemer of humanity and the cosmos, as well as Mary as God-bearer (Theotokos). The remainder of the classes then deal with the life in Christ – asceticism, worship, icon veneration, mystical experience and contemplative prayer. I conclude with some contemporary considerations regarding ecology, as well as women, gender, and sexuality. This class offers a rare opportunity for students to gain familiarity with the “other half” of Christianity – a Christianity at once familiar and yet startling in its distinctiveness.

You won't find a more patient and kind tutor !
This is your go-to tutor for help with academic essays and theses, whether it is at the planning stage, research, argumentation and organization, to editing and revising.
Take your writing to the next level with Daniel !Daniel is a thoughtful and patient teacher. He knows his subject matter well and has an inquisitive nature. I have gained insight in our interactions. He communicates clearly.
I was in grad school with Daniel for many years for an MA in Classics and his PhD in religious studies. In that time we've talked about a lot of things he knows - Buddhism, Greek philosophy, Church history, Russian mysticism, paper-writing, academic life, carpentry - both his expertises and life experiences are impossibly broad.
I've only ever been Daniel's rival, never formally his student. But few scholars or conversation partners are like him. Patient, attentive, humble, enthusiastic about learning... in other words, he is a great teacher. I admire him so much that I hate him, and I envy his students that they have no reason to hate him. Plus he won't even do me the honour of hating me back. Study with him! You will not regret it!Daniel is a very patient and skilled instructor and he's helped me a lot with my writing. I heard he teaches Ancient Greek too! Highly recommended
