About Rosie
I am fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
Former Cambridge University college lecturer in natural science. I have a double first, first class masters in neuroscience and doctorate in medicine from Churchill College Cambridge. I have postgraduate qualifications and have taught at a postgraduate level. I have published research in neuroscience while working at Cambridge and Manchester Universities.
Nowadays I live in Bolton, with my beautiful 8 year old son who has special needs. My son is my youngest student and every week we work on a different topic and prepare a presentation that he gives to his class at school.
My hobbies include 3D printing, mathematics, astrophysics and looking after my rescue dog and cat. I also write music and play the bass guitar.
What primarily motivates me to work as a tutor is my love of science. Ever since I was a young child I had a fascination with the subject, as it explains how the world works. I also enjoy helping people and playing a role in getting a student into a good university, which I hope is the first step towards a rewarding professional career for them.

My first experience of tutoring came when I was only 17 years old. My 15 year old sister had been estimated C and D grades in her GCSE exams. My mum wanted her to get A grades but the teachers at our school had told my mum this was beyond her academic ability. My mum was the type of lady who never took no for an answer, and undeterred, requested that I tutored her. Although I had never tutored before I rose to this difficult challenge and taught my sister in all her 10 GCSE subjects. The teachers at our school were made to eat their words when my sister walked away with 10 straight A grades. Again at A level my sister was initially not estimated A grades so my mum asked me to leave Cambridge and drive to Bolton every weekend to fix this, so I did. My sister was my first success story. She is now a practicing doctor and is a partner in a GP surgery.
At Cambridge I did not just get a double first, I got the first place out of a year of 1000 students (250 medical, 50 vets and 700 natural science) in the majority of disciplines I studied. In recognition of this I was awarded the William Harvey scholarship, a prestigious award that recognises outstanding performance in students who come from a disadvantaged socioeconomic background. I also held the Churchill College scholarship for every year I studied there.
In 1997 I studied for a masters degree in neuroscience. Again I came top of the entire year and the research work I did at this stage was published in the Journal of Physiology. As a result I was asked to give my first ever lecture to a large group of university academics at a conference of the Physiological Society. Speaking to a crowd of about 100 professors and doctors and delivering a speech when I was a mere student was a daunting prospect, but I controlled my nerves and the lecture was hailed as one of the best from the conference.
Later that year I was approached by St Catharine's College to teach the undergraduate students physiology which is the branch of biology which deals with how tissues and organs work in animals and plants. It was quite irregular for a 20 year old student to be approached to lecture at a college, however the Director of Studies must have seen my potential. Within 2 weeks Magdalene College approached me to also work there. Word soon spread round the university that I was better at teaching than the more qualified professors and within a few months I was working 36 hours a week teaching in 16 of the 31 colleges. I extended my subjects from just physiology and began teaching anatomy, genetics, biochemistry and neuroscience. In fact it was so much fun I neglected my own studies a little bit, so I stopped 4 months before my finals and still managed to pass them with a distinction.
I went on to teach at Cambridge until I was 26 and then taught at Manchester while researching the neuroscience of diabetes.
Nowadays I prefer to teach at GCSE and A level on a one to one basis, because I deal with students with a more diverse range of backgrounds and academic abilities. This presents me with additional challenges that I never encountered when working at a university level.
