Encouraging people to think outside of the ascribed texts and relating the works they read to their own lived experiences and cultures is something I strongly advocate and integrate into my teaching. I also like to slowly incorporate essay techniques towards the end of the lessons, and get students to regularly practise writing so that they can get into the habit of doing this and don't find exam practice too daunting when they get to it.
