About Carmen
Acting & Audition Coaching: From Shakespeare to Contemporary Realism
Whether you are prepping a monologue for a Netflix audition or tackling a complex Shakespearean lead, the goal is the same: unshakeable truth.
With 25 years of experience as a Director and Artistic Director of The Philadelphia Shakespeare Theatre, I specialize in helping actors find their unique voice in any text. My background is in the mechanics of great acting. I bridge the gap between the heightened language of the 16th century and the gritty realism of today’s stage and screen.
I’ve produced over 60 professional productions and co-authored annotated editions of Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet, in our Shakespeare Moment By Moment series, but my teaching focus is always on the present moment. I work with professional actors, university students, high school students, and returning professionals to build performances that are physically alive, emotionally honest, and technically precise.

My Teaching Philosophy: The Directorial Perspective My approach is rooted in the belief that acting is an active craft, not an emotional one. I teach students to stop 'showing' a feeling and start 'pursuing' a goal. My methodology combines the rigor of classical text analysis with the visceral energy of contemporary physical theater.
The Three Pillars of Our Sessions:
• Objective-Based Action: We move away from vague "moods" and focus on playable actions. I help you identify exactly what your character wants from the other person in the scene and the specific tactics they use to get it. This creates high-stakes, "page-turner" performances that keep an audience (and a casting director) hooked.
• The "Living" Text: Whether it’s a modern screenplay or a verse play, language is a tool for survival. We will break down your script , moment by moment, to find the rhythm, the imagery, and the "operative words." My goal is to help you inhabit the language so naturally that the words feel like they are being born in your mind for the very first time.
• Physical Storytelling: Acting doesn't happen from the neck up. We work on grounding your performance in your body. By aligning your physical choices with your character's objectives, we eliminate "actor-y" habits and replace them with authentic, confident presence.
What to Expect: In our first session, we will assess your current "toolkit" and identify your specific goals. You won't just get feedback; you will get directorial adjustments that you can apply immediately. You will leave every session with a clear set of "homework" and a deeper confidence in your craft.
