I like to assess what elements of the subject students are most confident with by approaching the foundational elements first and build until the student faces a challenge.
I then believe it’s most effective to discuss the challenging elements in depth (within the realms of reason) in order to address and unpick any misconceptions or gaps in understanding.
If I’m working in a group setting, I am inclined to utilise the perspectives of those students who have a firmer grasp on certain elements to maintain collective engagement and give the others another voice to listen to. I believe approaching any subject with clear structure, but enough flexibility to change the pace of learning is the best way to build confidence and increase how much students retain. Additionally, class participation in explaining new concepts has proven to improve memory retention.
