About Noemi
I am passionate about foreign languages and cultures. Learning a new language not only opens doors to communication in that language-- it opens the door to PARTICIPATE in an entirely other culture. I have long been fascinated by foreign languages. Beginning with Italian, French, German, and most recently, Mandarin Chinese, I am not one to shy away from a challenge. Humans are pretty cool because of our ability to communicate so specifically and uniquely! Languages have developed so beautifully over the course of human history. My passion is to discover that beauty.

TEACHING METHOD & TECHNIQUE:
I am a native speaker in both English and Spanish. I have experience informally teaching both languages. As a passionate student of multiple languages (German, Mandarin Chinese, French, Italian) my approach to language learning is very unique. I believe languages are to be acquired, rather than merely studied and then translated into one's native tongue for comprehension. My technique is learning to THINK in a new language. Instead of translation, my approach is similar to that of a young child acquiring their first language.
Maximum exposure to the target language through listening and visuals is vital. This is where the accent is picked up. Basic vocabulary should be acquired in chunks and short phrases. Grammar is not essential at this time-- it will be grasped in the student's mind as the student progresses in their comprehension of their target language. A language student must take every opportunity to speak their target language and spend time with native speakers of that language to correct them as much as possible. Every mistake matters! Every mistake is important-- they are required and should be expected for optimal language acquisition. As longer, more complex phrases are learned by the language student, they are able to expand their vocabulary. After a considerable amount of experience with the target language, the student can then proceed to focus, in increments, on reading and writing and later, grammar-- but this should not be attempted prior to the student successfully navigating basic introductory conversations.
TYPICAL LESSON PLAN:
Introduce new material-- native pronunciation of vowels & consonants, diphthongs, sound pairs, etc.
Practice and repetition-- conversation practice, listening & speaking skills practice
Reading practice-- assessment of student's pronunciation while they read/speak
WHAT SETS ME APART AS A TUTOR:
I take time to individually assess my students' language skills level.
I'm not afraid of correcting the smallest mistake in my students. This comes from my desire to see my students speak with native-sounding accents. They have the potential-- I just bring it out of them.
I am patient and personally care for each of my students' success. I will teach them to THINK in a new language. They will not just learn a new language-- they will ACQUIRE a new language.
WHO THE LESSONS ARE FOR:
My lessons are for adults of all ages. I teach individuals who have already tried to learn the English language using other tools/programs but lack the native-sounding accent.
My students typically already have a solid English vocabulary, knowledge on the grammar, experience reading and writing.
I am here to teach them native-sounding pronunciation.
