About Aspa

Γεια! My name is Aspa and I am a native Greek speaker, experienced educator, and qualified language tutor (QTS) with a rich background in both mainstream and specialist education across London.

I hold a BA in Primary Education from the University of Patras and a Master’s Degree with Distinction in Special and Inclusive Education from the University of Nottingham.

My approach is shaped by years of hands-on experience supporting diverse learners — something that’s rarely found in standard Greek language tuition.  I don’t just teach language; I teach the whole learner.

I currently hold an advisory role within a London local authority, supporting autistic children and young people through inclusive, neurodiversity-affirming strategies. My work is grounded in evidence-based practice and shaped by over a decade of experience supporting students with diverse communication, learning and sensory profiles.

I have taught in supplementary Greek schools in the UK, including the Greek School of Mansfield and the Greek School of St Demetrios, and in primary schools in Greece and Poland. For the past ten years, I have also been delivering one-to-one and small group Greek language tutoring to children learning Greek as a second language — both face-to-face and online.

My tutoring sessions are not just lessons — they are joyful, carefully tailored experiences. I use a holistic, play-based and interest-led approach to spark curiosity and build strong foundations in communication, literacy and cultural understanding.

My goal is to help each child feel seen, safe, and confident as they connect with the Greek language — building not just vocabulary, but a genuine love for the language and culture.

In our first session, I take time to get to know your child — their interests, strengths, and how they learn best — so I can design a personalised Greek learning journey that evolves with them and keeps them inspired every step of the way.

  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

Greek is my mother tongue - I was born and raised in Athens, so it’s always been part of my everyday life, not just something I “learned”.

I studied Primary Education in Greece and then moved to the UK almost 9 years ago, where I completed my MA in Special and Inclusive Education. Even though I’ve been living abroad for years, Greek is still a huge part of my identity - I use it daily, I teach it, and honestly.. I can’t imagine myself without it.
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

I’d say Socrates - because Greek culture is so deeply connected to thinking, questioning, and meaningful conversations.

At the same time, Greek culture is equally reflected in everyday people - there is something deeply representative in the warmth, expressiveness, and strong sense of identity you find across generations.
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behaviour in the language that you particularly like?

    Honestly, where do I start…

Greek has words that don’t fully translate, and that’s what makes it so special:

kefi — that joyful, almost contagious energy
filoxenia — treating people like they’re already part of your family
meraki — doing something with love and soul
filotimo — a deep inner sense of doing the right thing

Also, Greeks don’t just speak - we use our whole body! A look, a hand movement, a simple “έλα μωρέ” can say everything.

A big part of my life has also been traditional Greek dancing. I’ve been dancing since I was around 5, especially island dances, and it’s something that still connects me to home.

And lifestyle-wise… I love the simplicity of Greek life. Good food, slow moments, lots of sun, swimming, being with people you love - those ανέμελα καλοκαίρια (carefree summers) are a whole philosophy, not just a season.
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

It’s my language — it’s how I think, feel, and express myself at the deepest level.

Greek is also one of the most influential languages in the world. So many English words come from Greek!

What I love as well is how logical it is. Once you learn the alphabet and the rules, you can read almost anything - the pronunciation is consistent, which makes it much less confusing than English!

For me, it’s not just a language - t’s culture, history, identity, and connection.
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Greek can feel a bit.. dramatic at first.

You have genders (masculine, feminine, neutral), articles that change, and different cases - so yes, sometimes students ask me “why is the chair feminine??”

But once you see the patterns, it all starts making sense.

I use a lot of visual supports, patterns based on word endings, and interactive activities to make it easier and actually enjoyable. I don’t believe in just memorising - I want my students to understand and feel confident using the language.
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

One of my favourite moments was when I was teaching and trying to explain something quite complex, and a student looked at me and said:
“Miss… this is Greek to me.”

We all just paused and then burst out laughing.

It became our inside joke, but also a reminder that learning should feel safe and fun, not stressful.
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language? I adapt everything to the student: their level, their goals, and how they learn best. My background in special and inclusive education also means I’m very aware of different learning needs/strengths/differences and how to support them effectively. I offer both online and in-person lessons, and I’ve worked with students across different countries and age groups. But most importantly, I genuinely care. I want my students to feel confident, comfortable, and actually enjoy learning Greek.

Living and travelling between countries has completely shaped the way I teach.

Working with people from different cultures has helped me understand how differently everyone approaches language learning. It’s made me more flexible, more creative, and more aware of what each student really needs.

It’s not just about teaching Greek - it’s about connecting with people, adapting, and making the language meaningful for them.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

I think it’s the combination of professionalism and personality.

I’m a native Greek speaker, qualified teacher, and I’ve taught in Greece and the UK for years - but at the same time, I really focus on making lessons feel relaxed, supportive, and tailored to each person.
