The big advise as a tutor I might give is that all learners must open their minds and be aware that speaking a different language it is also a different way to think about things.
We can find some nice and fun exercises to start thinking in the language we are trying to learn.

I love teaching Spanish by speaking, using simple phrases and sentences that you as learner can identify and use easily. Then using that as a base, start explaining little by little some of the grammar rules that are going to be more useful when learning Spanish.
I also love giving advices for English native speakers about how to make easier the pronunciation of some sounds that may be complicated for someone whose native language is not Spanish.
