About Dima
Apart from her work as a journalist, Dima is also a writer. Her short story collection “Tafâsîl” (“Details”, Dar al adab, Beirut, 2007; published in German by Nautilus) brings together nine consecutively numbered stories that form a panorama of daily life on the eve of the Syrian revolution. In 2008, Wannous published her first novel “Al-Kursi” (“The Chair”, Dar al adab, Beirut). Her second novel “Al khaifoun” (“The Frightened Ones”, 2017, Dar al adab, Beirut) focuses on the notion of fear, its mechanisms, and how central it is to dictatorship. “Al Khaifoun” was exceptionally well received by the international publishing scene, and was sold in translation to over ten languages – English, UK (Harvill Secker, Penguin Random House, to appear), English, US (Knopf, to appear), Dutch (Signatuur, A.W. Bruna, 2018), French (Gallimard, to appear), German (Blessing, Random House, 2018), Italian (Baldini & Castoldi, 2018), Swedish (Norstedts, 2018), Macedonian (Prozart, to appear), Polish (Sonia Draga, to appear), Norwegian (Solum, to appear), and Turkish (Mevsimler, 2018).
“The frightened ones” was also on the shortlist of the International Prize for Arabic Fiction (or Arab Man Booker) 2018. Previously, Wannous was also selected for “Beirut 39”, a project initiated by the prestigious Hay Festival of literature in collaboration with the London based magazine for Arabic literature “Banipal”. “Beirut 39” selected the most interesting 39 Arab authors under 40.
