Find a number such that when it is successively added to 5 and subtracted from 15, the product of the two results is 96.
SOLUTION
Let the number be any variable e.g x or y
Let say we pick "x" as the number.
Then 5 is added i.e (x+5)
Also x is subtracted from 15 i.e (15-x)
Then the product of the two results is 96.
I.e (x+5)(15-x)=96
By expanding the bracket
X(15-x)+5(15-x)=96
15x-x²+75-5x-96=0
By rearranging
x²-10x+21=0
By factorization method
(x-3)(x-7)=0
Therefore x=3 or x= 7
Hence the number is 3 or 7.
