About Rory
I am a current law student at La Trobe University, graduated Year 12 in 2017 with an English score of 38. I spent six months teaching English as a second language in Hohhot, China during my gap year, and currently tutor both primary and high school English at EduKingdom.
I have taught hundreds of students during my time in China and, more recently, tutor thirty students at varying skill levels.
Although my marking style is often very harsh, my students have all risen to the challenge, and I am proud to report that my past students have gone onto complete IELTS exams with scores as high as 7.0, the lowest scoring student achieving a score of 6.0.

My style is primarily skills-based. I focus primarily on getting students doing the work and practicing the skills I teach them, resulting in long-term improvement for the student.
A standard lesson begins with a short game or activity in order to get students thinking about and excited about English. Following this, I take them through the skill that will be developed during the lesson. After this, a second activity, usually a writing task or a worksheet. I assist the student throughout the process, as this is not under test conditions. Afterwards, homework is assigned, and a very brief activity closes out the class.
Usually homework will consist of a written task or a worksheet, designed to test the skill that has been practiced during the session. Between each class, I mark the students' work.
I firmly believe that a student that is properly taught the skills to succeed will go onto achieve great things. Often a students' opposition to English class is simply due to them not having been taught how to write an essay, or how to write a story, or how to persuade an audience. Schools are often heavily limited by a lack of funding and massive class sizes, preventing teachers from covering these areas to the extent that many students need. This results in students feeling ignored, lethargic, and potentially acting out.
In focusing on the skills that a student lacks, I resolve the problem at its source, thereby improving the students marks and fostering a love for English as a subject.
