About Thaniya
Greetings,
I introduced myself to students who were new to me, but who had primarily spent their whole lives in a school district that they knew inside and out.
I repeated an adage that had always impressed me, “You learn as much as you teach.”
Students heard their new History,Economics,Business Studies and English teacher tell them that he hoped to help them reach higher than they might have without his enthusiastic presence.
My credentials were strong, especially in that era. With earned Bachelor’s Degree in History and Sociology and Master’s Degrees in Literature and Economics, I did not have an B.Ed., and was hired primiarily for my subject-matter depth.
So, by showing humility, kindness, and, importantly, absolutely no hint of hubris, students gave me every chance, and our year was wildly successful.
History can be a tough sell in secondary school, and the teacher usually makes all the difference.
My predecessor had been in the role for twenty-seven years, was the brother of an influential school board member who was an elder in one of the area’s most powerful churches, and had enjoyed the prestige of fielding winning football teams.
He was a tough act to follow.
Many students had eagerly anticipated being in his class, and were upset that he decided to retire early.
But, because I introduced myself as zealous about the subject, yet humble and open to feedback, students were curious about the learning experience I was prepared to offer.
