About Max
I earned an MA in Comparative Literature at the University of Utah in 2016 and an MFA in Comics from California College of the Arts in 2023. I have taught at all levels, specializing in illustration, graphic design, and cultural studies with comics and graphic novels as a main focus area. Prior to working as an educator, I have years of experience in the non-profit and government sectors working in communication, grant writing, and community outreach.

My framework for teaching is rooted in "Plorking" - that is acclaimed printmaker Corita Kent's term for "play and work." This strategy combines creative practices such as illustration and observation with hard work in developing writing and design abilities. We use real-life examples with hands-on applications in each lesson, and students will come away asking good questions and wanting to explore more. Along with tutoring test-taking and homework strategies, I have taught comics, illustration, art history, writing, and literature at the primary and secondary level, with particular experience working with undergraduate freshmen and sophomore students. My lessons help connect creative practices with the real world, and let creative students work at their pace to understand the material.
