• Did you grow up speaking this language? Or were you inspired by a trip abroad, an individual, or a certain aspect of the culture?

  Yes, I grew up speaking Mandarin as my native language. I was born and raised in China, where Mandarin is the official language. My exposure to the language started from a very young age, both at home and in school, which allowed me to develop a deep connection to it. The language is intertwined with my cultural identity, and my passion for teaching Mandarin stems from a desire to share this rich linguistic and cultural heritage with others.

• Can you name a living, historical, or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

  One emblematic figure in Chinese culture is Confucius (孔子). Although he lived over 2,500 years ago, his teachings and philosophy have deeply influenced Chinese culture, language, and society. Confucius is a symbol of wisdom, respect for tradition, and the importance of education, all of which are integral aspects of Chinese culture. His sayings and ideas are still widely quoted and studied today.

• Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition, or expression in the language that you particularly like?

  One expression I particularly like is "家和万事兴" (jiā hé wàn shì xīng), which means "A harmonious family leads to prosperity in everything." This phrase reflects the importance of family harmony and unity, which are central values in Chinese culture. It's a beautiful reminder of the power of a supportive and loving family environment.

• Why does speaking this language matter to you?

  Speaking Mandarin matters to me because it is not only a means of communication but also a way to preserve and share my cultural heritage. Mandarin is a language rich in history, philosophy, and art. By teaching it, I am able to connect with people from different backgrounds and help them understand and appreciate Chinese culture. It's fulfilling to see students grow in their proficiency and develop a deeper connection to the language and its cultural context.

• What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

  One of the main difficulties in learning Mandarin is mastering the tones, as the meaning of a word can change completely depending on the tone used. Additionally, the complexity of Chinese characters can be challenging for learners. However, consistent practice and immersion can significantly help in overcoming these difficulties. Engaging with native speakers, listening to Mandarin in various contexts, and practicing writing characters regularly are all effective strategies for improving language skills.

• Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

  During my school days in China, I remember participating in a speech competition where I had to recite classical Chinese poetry. The experience was both challenging and rewarding, as it required not only a deep understanding of the language but also an appreciation of its literary beauty. This experience deepened my love for Mandarin and reinforced my desire to share this beautiful language with others.

• How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

  While I grew up in China, moving abroad has provided me with a unique perspective on my native language. Teaching Mandarin in a different cultural environment has made me more aware of the nuances and challenges that learners face. It has also helped me develop more effective teaching methods by understanding the common difficulties non-native speakers encounter and finding creative ways to address them. The experience of living abroad has enriched my understanding of how Mandarin can connect people across cultures.
